Mallory dug into her steak, unable to hold her tongue any longer. "What is your ex-mother-in-law's damage? She literally never stops coming after you. You and Killian are about to finalize the divorce anyway, so why is she still obsessed with ruining your life?"
Thinking back to Killian's bizarre stalling tactics on the phone, Jillian was equally perplexed.
She had been ready to sever ties for months, yet Killian was suddenly refusing to sign the papers, vaguely claiming he needed to confirm a suspicion first.
She searched her memory for anything she might have hidden during their marriage, but came up empty. She had absolutely no idea what he was investigating.
"I honestly don't know," Jillian sighed softly. "She's targeted my mother twice this week alone. I think there is something genuinely psychologically wrong with her."
"Of course there is!" Mallory leaned across the table, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Women like her are practically bred for mental breakdowns. Her husband doesn't love her, her son doesn't respect her, and she's trapped in a gilded cage playing the perfect Quincy matriarch. Since she doesn't have the guts to challenge her own mother-in-law, she unloads all her twisted resentment onto you. Once the ink dries on that divorce decree, you'll finally have some peace."
Jillian frowned slightly, taking a moment to genuinely analyze Sienna's life for the very first time.
Throughout her years married to Killian, she had never once met his father. She had actually assumed the man was dead.
It was only through passing gossip that she learned Killian's father lived permanently abroad and practically never set foot in the country.
In other words, Sienna had spent the better part of her adult life anchored to a loveless, entirely superficial marriage.
She had been forced to pour every ounce of her emotional dependency into her child.
Yet Killian had always kept her at arm's length, which perfectly explained why she had relentlessly spoiled Natalie to the point of absolute toxicity.
"When you put it like that, her life is incredibly tragic," Jillian murmured.
"Exactly," Mallory agreed, slicing into her food. "None of those old-money wives are actually happy. Look at Sienna. She was forced into a corporate marriage with a man who despised her. Not only was she abandoned in an empty mansion, but she was also forced to raise her husband's illegitimate child."
"Illegitimate child?"
"Huh?" Mallory paused, her fork hovering in midair as she looked up in shock. "You really didn't know?"
