"Have you gotten used to living on your own lately?" Daniel Langley asked.

Jillian Jarrett took a bite of her food without looking up. "It's fine, I guess."

Daniel looked at her with concern.

Giving birth to Connor Quincy had nearly killed her.

He had heard it took her a very long time to recover after having the baby.

She had cried every single day.

At the time, he was terrified she had severe postpartum depression.

It explained why she was so intensely protective of Connor, even willing to sacrifice herself for him.

Sometimes, Daniel could understand it.

"I have to get used to it whether I like it or not," Jillian said, looking up with a faint smile. "Once the divorce is finalized, I'll be lucky if Killian lets me see my son once a month."

She told herself she might as well start adjusting to it now.

Daniel nodded.

Marriages in high society were difficult enough as it was.

The gap between her background and Killian's was simply too vast.

Daniel's phone rang with an incoming video call.

"Good afternoon, Leon," Daniel greeted.

"There's nothing good about it. It's the middle of the damn night over here. If we close this deal, Daniel, you owe me a massive dinner when I get back," an unfamiliar male voice complained from the other end.

Daniel laughed. "Forget one dinner, I'll buy you ten. But that's assuming you actually make it back."

"Bastard!"

The two men went on to discuss the specifics of their potential partnership with Rohmbach Automotive.

It seemed Daniel was relying on his friend overseas to help push the negotiations forward.

It made sense. A deal of this magnitude couldn't be pulled off by just one or two people.

"Leon Vance. He's a friend of mine."

After ending the call, Daniel offered Jillian a casual explanation.

Jillian nodded.

A week flew by.

Jillian was growing more and more accustomed to her current workflow.

She didn't love him at all.

The more Connor thought about it, the more upset he became.

"Don't cry, sweetie. Your dad will get mad if he sees you," Sylvia said, quickly wiping away his tears.

"Then how can I see my mom?" Connor asked.

"Well, I can't say for sure. But when I was little and made my mom mad, all I had to do was get sick, and she'd forgive me right away."

"Get sick?"

Connor looked hesitant.

That night, after returning home, Connor took a bath and lay in bed.

If he got sick, his mom would definitely come see him, right?

He climbed out of bed and grabbed his smartwatch.

Usually, Mrs. Zeller kept his smartwatch locked away so he wouldn't play with it too much.

But on weekends, he was allowed to use it.

Connor tapped on his mother's profile picture.
