Back in the hospital room, Jillian and Judith had returned from their walk.
Killian pushed the door open, casually dropping the insulated meal box he was carrying onto the bedside table with an icy demeanor.
It was currently five in the afternoon.
After fasting entirely before the surgery and subsisting solely on clear liquids for a full day post-op, Jillian had essentially been starving for two straight days. Finally, she was allowed to eat a light, solid meal.
Even with the IV fluids pumping through her veins, her stomach still ached with hunger.
Knowing her daughter was famished, Judith ignored everything else and immediately opened the container, laying out the warm food.
Steam billowed from the dishes, emitting a mouth-watering aroma.
Jillian glanced up at Killian, who stood silently nearby with a rigid, frigid expression.
She was long accustomed to it, so without offering any forced pleasantries, she simply lowered her head and ate in silence.
Halfway through her meal, a gentle knock sounded at the door.
Daniel pushed his way inside, carrying his own container of food.
Seeing Jillian already eating, he paused, a flicker of awkwardness crossing his face as he stood there holding the box, unsure whether to advance or retreat.
"Daniel, you're here," Jillian greeted him first.
"I figured you could finally eat after your surgery, so I brought you some light dishes. It looks like I'm a bit late," Daniel said with a faint smile.
"Not late at all, your timing is perfect. Jill is starving," Judith quickly stepped forward, taking the food and arranging it on the table.
Jillian took a few bites of what Daniel had brought, her eyes softening. "It's delicious. It's exactly that sweet and savory flavor I love."
"Knowing your stomach would be sensitive post-op, I specifically asked my chef to use less oil and salt, and to make it a bit softer and milder," Daniel explained.
"Thank you so much, Daniel."
"No trouble at all." Daniel smiled, gesturing toward Judith. "Judith, you should eat too. There's way too much food here to finish, and after taking care of Jillian all day, you deserve a proper meal."
Judith tried to decline, but he warmly guided her into a seat.
In an instant, the atmosphere in the room turned light and harmonious. Jillian, Judith, and Daniel chatted and laughed, the space radiating a cozy warmth.
Killian, standing off to the side, was the sole outlier, looking entirely out of place.
