Sylvia stared fixedly at the protective hand Daniel held out for Jillian, her jealousy burning white-hot.

Swallowing her rage, she let out a hollow laugh and slowed her words. "Why the rush? Silas and I had a lovely chat the other day. He told me all the juicy details about your adoption, and... about your biological mother."

Jillian froze mid-step and slowly turned around. "What did you just say?"

Seeing she had finally struck a nerve, Sylvia’s eyes gleamed with triumph. She dragged it out maliciously. "Never mind. You probably don't care anyway."

Jillian steadied her breathing. She gently pushed Daniel’s arm away, her voice resolute. "I'm going to speak with her for a minute."

Daniel was tense. "I'm coming with you."

"It's fine," Jillian assured him with a calm smile.

They were at a highly publicized centennial gala surrounded by elite guests. Sylvia wouldn't dare pull anything too drastic.

Besides, Jillian was no longer the soft target she used to be. In every clash they'd had, Sylvia always ended up looking foolish. Jillian wasn't afraid of her.

Seeing the hardened resolve in her eyes, Daniel reluctantly nodded.

The two women walked away from the deafening banquet hall, heading toward a secluded restroom at the very end of a long corridor.

The location was entirely isolated. With the party raging on the other side of the building, no guest would ever wander this far.

Sylvia stepped up to the sink, turned on the faucet, and began slowly washing her hands, exuding a practiced, lazy arrogance.

"What exactly did Silas tell you?" Jillian demanded immediately.

She almost never brought up her past. Because Judith was so deeply sensitive and loving, Jillian avoided asking questions about her origins out of fear that Judith would think she wanted to find her real parents.

Sylvia pulled a paper towel, dried her hands meticulously, and turned around with a vicious sneer. "Silas told me that adopting you was entirely Judith's crusade. He was completely against it from day one."

"Look at you, Jillian. From the very beginning, no one ever actually wanted you. Not even the man who raised you."

"Is that all the garbage you have to spew?" Jillian cut her off coldly. Her eyes were utterly dead, devoid of any hurt. "Whether Silas approves of me or not means absolutely nothing. If this is all you have, I have better things to do."

Failing to break her, Sylvia’s malice went into overdrive.

She slowly closed the distance, stepping behind Jillian, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Since you don't care about that, let's talk about something you do care about..."

Before the sentence ended, Sylvia lunged. Her hand locked onto Jillian’s pinned hair, and she violently yanked backward!

A sharp sting flared across her scalp. Jillian instinctively raised her arms to protect her head.

Capitalizing on the chaos, Sylvia shoved her forward with all her strength, throwing Jillian straight into one of the stalls. She instantly slammed the heavy main restroom door shut and locked it from the outside.
