Silas pointed a trembling finger at her, barking his reprimand. "I am warning you—do not lay another finger on Sylvia! You graduated from St. Jude's University, yet you act like some unhinged street thug, brawling with people. Is this the trash Judith Jarrett taught you?"
Jillian remained silent, staring at the vaguely familiar face twisting with disgust.
Memories of her childhood suddenly surfaced.
Back then, she had desperately craved a single word of validation from him, practically begging for him to just look at her or speak to her.
But Silas had offered her nothing but coldness and neglect.
It was human nature to desperately crave what was denied to you.
She truly had been that pathetic little girl pleading for his attention.
But looking back on it now, it was just laughable.
Seeing her spaced out in silence, Silas assumed he had intimidated her. His tone grew even more arrogant. "I know you're secretly jealous of Sylvia, that you think she stole everything from you. But you need a reality check. She was born into wealth, and you are just an abandoned brat nobody wanted. I am willing to acknowledge you as my daughter now, but you have to know your place and submit to Sylvia."
Jillian snapped out of her reverie, letting out a laugh as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world.
"Mr. Xavier, I think you're confused," she cut him off sharply. "I was naive when I was a kid. I didn't know how to tell right from wrong. But I have absolutely zero need for a father now. Stop flattering yourself. If you want to play dad, go home to Sylvia."
Silas was completely stunned.
The icy, unyielding woman standing before him was nothing like the timid, terrified little girl he remembered.
Jillian completely ignored his existence, standing up and ordering her assistant to pack up her files; she had to head out for a meeting.
Unwilling to give up, Silas dogged her steps, harassing her all the way to the elevator. "Did Judith put you up to saying that?"
Even as the elevator descended, he wouldn't shut up. "Don't think just because you run a company you can disrespect me! Look at yourself—stubborn and obnoxious. No one is ever going to love you!"
Jillian completely lost what little patience she had left.
Stepping out into the lobby, she immediately flagged down security. "This man is causing a disturbance. Throw him out. If he makes a scene, call the cops."
Several security guards instantly swarmed forward, forcefully but politely shoving Silas back.
Jillian and her assistant walked right out of the lobby and into a waiting car. The car started and pulled away.
Restrained by the guards, Silas watched the car pull away, trembling with pure, unadulterated fury.
He was a prestigious artist. Everywhere he went, he was treated with reverence. And today, he was being manhandled by a bunch of mall cops.
He screamed at the car's exhaust pipe. "Jillian! Do you think you're so untouchable now? You're just a bastard that nobody wanted! If your parents had cared about you, you wouldn't have ended up in our house!"
Jillian didn't even flinch. The car sped off into the distance.
Not far away, a sleek luxury car sat parked by the curb.
