For the first time in his professional career, Gibson had a patient fire him.
A heavy sense of disappointment clouded his entire afternoon.
When he returned home that evening, his family was gathered in the living room.
Madeline Xavier asked with motherly concern, "Have you eaten yet?"
"Not yet. I'm meeting some friends for dinner."
"That sounds lovely."
Silas Xavier chimed in, "Are you meeting Killian and the guys?"
Gibson nodded.
Silas chuckled and turned to Sylvia. "Perfect timing. You should tag along with him, Sylvia."
Sylvia scoffed, rolling her eyes. "I have no interest in sitting through their boring boys' night out."
Madeline agreed softly. "It's good not to be attached at the hip all the time. Couples need their own space."
Silas laughed heartily, seemingly teasing Sylvia.
Suddenly, a thought struck him. "Oh, by the way, I actually ran into Killian's wife yesterday."
Madeline's eyes widened in alarm. "What happened?"
"Killian took me out to dinner yesterday to discuss teaching his son painting. We just happened to run into her."
Madeline frowned, her tone dripping with suspicion. "Was it really a coincidence? Or did she track him down?"
She directed the question at Sylvia.
Sylvia shrugged carelessly. "Who knows."
Seeing her daughter's nonchalant attitude, Madeline couldn't help but issue a stern warning. "You need to be careful. I'm telling you, these scheming women from low-class backgrounds are the absolute worst. They're like leeches—once they latch on, they never let go."
Sylvia groaned, hating the lecture. "Ugh, Mom, I know."
She stood up and headed upstairs toward her bedroom.
He couldn't believe his own sister had been used as a pawn for a social climber's ascension. The coincidental club joining was clearly just phase one of her master plan.
And his naive little sister was completely oblivious.
Gibson looked at Sylvia, thinking she was almost too innocent for her own good.
"Oh, you," he sighed heavily.
"What did I do?" Sylvia pouted, acting defensive.
"Did it ever cross your mind that her joining the same club as you was entirely intentional?"
"Wait, really?"
"Of course. She found out you were in that club and joined specifically to get close to you, all so she could use you to get to Killian."
"Oh. I see."
Sylvia's expression suddenly stiffened, and she forced a stiff smile. "I, um, have something to do, Gibson. Talk later."
