A week passed in the blink of an eye.

On Friday evening, Connor returned from school, as happy as a bird freed from its cage.

"Yes! Tomorrow I finally get to learn painting from Professor Xavier!" He tossed his backpack into the air, and Jillian rushed to catch it.

"Mom, Dad said you have to take me to Professor Xavier's house. Do you remember?"

Connor turned to look at her.

Catching his bag, Jillian lowered her head to organize its contents.

"I'll have Mrs. Zeller take you."

"Why?" Connor protested loudly. "I want you to take me! You haven't spent time with me in so long."

"I can play with you over the weekend or take you to the amusement park. But taking you to your painting lesson? That's not going to happen."

"Mom!" Connor stomped his foot in frustration.

"I don't think you love me as much as you used to!"

Jillian shook her head inwardly.

Connor had indeed done things that broke her heart, but he was her only child. No matter what he did, Jillian could accept it.

Her love for him hadn't diminished; it had simply become more rational.

"You just hate Sylvia, so you refuse to take me to her house! You only care about yourself! You don't care about me at all!"

Connor continued to complain.

This time, Jillian felt his first sentence held some truth. She looked at him and said quietly, "One."

Confused, Connor chased after her. "Mom, what did you say?"

Only Jillian knew what she meant.

One. Minus one.

It meant that because of those words, her love for him had just lost a point.

Jillian carried his backpack toward the villa.

Connor trailed behind her, his lips jutting out in grievance.

His obsession with learning from Silas Xavier wasn't just born out of admiration for the man.

Silas had been introduced by Sylvia, and more importantly, he was Sylvia's stepfather.

He wanted his mother to accompany him so she would have more opportunities to interact with Sylvia. That way, she would see how wonderful Sylvia was and stop hating her.

Whenever this father and son made decisions, they never considered her feelings for a second.

"I don't have the time. Wouldn't it be better if Mrs. Zeller took him? She spoils him endlessly, so he'd feel much more relaxed during his lesson anyway."

"I am informing you, not asking for your suggestions," Killian said lightly.

Jillian lost her appetite entirely. The food tasted like ash, and she couldn't force down another bite.

"From three to five tomorrow afternoon. Don't be late."

Jillian set her bowl down and stood up.

Behind her, Mrs. Zeller's sycophantic yet condescending voice rang out.

"Mrs. Quincy, you need to give a clear answer. Professor Xavier is a very busy man. He only agreed to teach Con as a favor to Ms. Xavier."

Jillian sneered inwardly.

After a long pause, she said, "I'll go."

On Saturday morning, Jillian received a call from the hospital staff. They informed her that there was a mix-up with the clothes she had packed for Stella and asked how she wanted to handle it.

Jillian was momentarily confused. Everything she had packed for Stella were brand-new clothes she had just bought her. How could there be a mix-up?
