"Mom, what are you doing here?"

Jillian pulled her son over to where her mother stood.

Judith beamed, eagerly lifting the lunchbox. "I missed Con so much. When you mentioned he'd be at the exhibition today, I figured I could just swing by and catch a glimpse of him."

Jillian was utterly stunned. "How did you even know which gallery we were going to? What if you had waited here for nothing?"

"Then I would have just gone home," Judith replied simply, an honest, warm smile spreading across her face.

A sour knot twisted in Jillian's chest.

Judith, completely unfazed, opened the lunchbox and focused entirely on Connor. "Look, honey. Grandma made all your favorites."

Connor normally loathed going to Judith's place, but he didn't actually dislike her. She had always doted on him, and seeing a mountain of his favorite food made his eyes light up instantly. "Wow! Thanks, Grandma! I was actually getting pretty hungry."

He glanced up at Jillian for approval, and she gave a soft nod. "Go ahead and eat."

Without missing a beat, he grabbed the spoon Judith handed him and practically inhaled the food.

Judith looked impossibly proud. "If they won't let me come to the house to see my grandson, I'll just find my own way. Nobody can stop me from seeing the boy I love."

Jillian maintained a smile on her face, but internally, she was drowning in a storm of conflicting emotions.

Her mother had poured her heart and soul into raising this boy, yet now she had to sneak around and beg for scraps of time just to see him. It was all because Jillian was too weak, allowing her mother to be relentlessly trampled on.

"Eat slowly, sweetie. If you like it, Grandma can make more and drop it off at your kindergarten."

"Thank you, Grandma," Connor replied. Surprisingly, there was no tantrum today; he was on his absolute best behavior.

Judith patted his head lovingly, looking completely fulfilled.

Meanwhile, inside the grand gallery, Silas was busy entertaining the VIP guests.

The room was packed with the absolute elite of the art world. He had received advance notice that the young Quincy heir would be in attendance.

"Has the young Mr. Quincy arrived yet?" he asked his assistant.

"Okay," Connor agreed, wiping his mouth. "I'm full, Grandma."

"Perfect." Judith snapped the lid back onto the lunchbox and smiled brightly at them both. "You two better hurry inside. Just getting to see Con was more than enough for me."

Jillian took a step forward. "I'll walk you to your car."

"No, no, I can just grab a cab." Judith waved her off enthusiastically, urging them toward the doors. With that, she turned and hurried across the plaza toward the busy street.

Silas finally reached them and smiled warmly. "Con."

Connor spun around, his eyes going wide. "Professor Xavier! What are you doing out here?"

"I came out to personally escort you, of course. The exhibition has already started, and my star pupil wasn't even inside yet."

"I'm sorry. My grandma brought me some snacks, and I was starving."

"That's perfectly fine. Growing boys need their energy," Silas said with an impossibly genial smile. He then lifted his gaze, sweeping an utterly dismissive, freezing look over Jillian.
