Chapter 260

The moment the video call connected, a low, threatening growl filled the room from the other side of the
screen.

On the other end, a powerful female lynx was restlessly pacing inside a custom-built enclosure.
Her paws, usually as soft as furry snow boots, now slashed at the heavy wooden railing like razor-sharp blades.
The railing was already covered in deep gouges, with wood chips scattered all around.
Don’t be fooled by her fluffy coat. Those teeth could bite right through a human’s arm bone, and one swipe of her claws could rip through muscle and tendons.
“You murderers! You killed my babies, and now you’ve locked me up in this cage!” The lynx’s wail hit Nina like a punch to the gut, making her chest tighten.
‘Did someone really kill her babies?’ Nina wondered, a chill running down her spine.
Just then, a staff member explained, “Professor Summer, this lynx has attacked people several times. But she’s strange. She only goes after people who are carrying cameras.
“She hasn’t eaten or drunk anything since she got here, and her condition is getting worse by the day.”
Suddenly, a calm and authoritative voice rang out from off-screen. “What’s the situation?”
The staff member quickly stepped aside. “Mr. Strong, Professor Summer is online.”
A middle-aged man with a straight back and a resolute, commanding aura entered the frame.
His eyes were piercing as he gave Nina a slight nod. “Hello, Professor Summer. I’m Waylen Strong, one of the people in charge of the northwest region,” he introduced himself.
Waylen signaled the staff to bring over the injured reporter, Langston Lindsey.
Langston’s left arm was wrapped up in a thick cast.
The moment the lynx spotted him, she started clawing furiously at the enclosure door, wood chips flying all over the place.
Langston was a military reporter who’d seen his share of drills and real action, so he didn’t even flinch at the chaos.
But he still couldn’t make sense of it and felt a bit upset. “Professor Summer, why’s this lynx got it out for me? It’s like she’s out to get me, like I did something unforgivable to her or something!”
“Let me out! I’m going to rip this cruel human to shreds! I’ll get revenge for my murdered babies!” The lynx vowed in her heart.
Nina asked the staff to bring the phone closer to the lynx and spoke softly, “Are you saying it was this reporter,

Langston, who killed your babies?”
The lynx, who’d been thrashing around just seconds ago, suddenly stopped, her ears standing straight up, alert. “Wait, this glowing little box. Can the person in there really understand what I’m saying?”
By now, Nina had walked from her office to the snow leopard habitat.
Silverclaw, the snow leopard mom Nina once helped during a tough delivery, padded over and rumbled a low purr at the phone screen. “Trust her.
She can understand what we say. She helped me when I was struggling to give birth. If you need help, just tell
her.”
“Even though snow leopards and lynxes weren’t the same kind, they were both big cats.
They both called the wild deserts and mountains of the northwest home, so they were locals from the same neck of the woods.
They could actually talk to each other a bit, using scent, sounds, and some basic body language.
Silverclaw’s arrival helped the lynx settle down. She started to speak, her breath ragged and her words halting. “That day, after hunting, I was about to feed my cubs when I saw a human with a buzzing black drone flying overhead.
“He was holding a shiny, square box in his hand.”
After spending so much time around animals, Nina could instantly match whatever they described to real- world stuff.
That black bird had to be a drone, and the shiny box was definitely a camera.
“And then that human kicked my cubs hard,” the lynx went on, her voice shaking with anger and hurt. “By the time I rushed over, my baby was already lying there, not moving at all!”
Her eyes narrowed in agony. “When that human heard me coming, he jumped onto some kind of roaring metal beast (dirt bike) and took off. All I saw was his back as he disappeared.”
She angrily pointed her paw at Langston. “The next day, that human came back, with that noisy black drone and his camera! Right at the spot where my baby was killed!
“This time, I won’t let him get away! I’m going to get revenge for my baby!”
Nina’s heart skipped a beat as everything suddenly clicked into place.
The lynx only remembered two things about the culprit: he was carrying camera gear, and he showed up at the scene of the crime.
So, when Langston appeared the next day with the same equipment at the same spot, it was only natural for the lynx to mistake him for the culprit behind her cubs’ death.
But then a key point hit Nina. Langston was a military reporter, which meant he pretty much only operated

inside military bases or during drills.

Those restricted zones were super strict about cameras and drones. Nobody was allowed to use that kind of gear without clearance.
If people could just film wherever they wanted, the base’s location or some top-secret stuff could be accidentally given away.
Nina immediately pressed Langston, “When exactly did the attack happen?”
“It was last Tuesday afternoon,” Langston answered.
“Did anyone from the military go out there with a drone or camera on Monday?” Nina pressed.
