Chapter 255
:
Alice’s grandson, Danny, who had always been her favorite, was a total loser. He kept failing at business and was always coming to her for money.
When he heard that a developer was willing to pay a high price for the house, Danny came up with a plan. He suggested hiring a bunch of so-called “spiritual masters” to stage a haunted house hoax.
Because Alice doted on Danny, she went along with the act.
They planned to sell the house as a haunted property to a trusted middleman at a low price, and then have the middleman resell it to the developer.
This way, they could sell the house smoothly, and Danny would get to keep all the money for himself.
But they never expected that the maid, Ada, who was hired by Fiona to look after Alice, would accidentally overhear their scheme.
When Alice tried to stop her, Ada freaked out and tumbled down the stairs. She died right then and there.
And that very night, Fiona was just about to arrive in Cloudville.
Panic-stricken, Alice suddenly remembered the secret chimney compartment that only she had the key to, so she and Danny hurried to string Ada’s body up inside.
The space was so cramped that they could only manage to shut the cabinet door by hanging the body up.
That night, when Fiona got back to Cloudville, she heard the creepy tapping coming from the chimney compartment. Confused, she asked Alice about it, and Alice just pretended the place was haunted.
Fiona was worried about her grandma, so she stayed at the villa to keep her company. Because of this, Danny and Alice never got a chance to move the body.
The body dangled in the vented chimney, swaying with the wind and making that unsettling tapping sound day and night.
Afraid Fiona would get suspicious, Danny and Alice decided to use the sound to spread rumors about the house being haunted.
They even hired a bunch of “spiritual masters” to come over and perform rituals, trying to make the place look like a haunted house so they could sell it off as soon as possible.
That way, they could quickly sell the haunted house to the middleman, quietly get rid of the body, and pocket the extra cash, without Fiona ever catching on.
But what they never saw coming was that, because Fiona was worried about Alice, she went and hired her own spiritual master, Nina.
Fiona just wanted to figure out what was really going on with the haunted house so her grandma could feel safe at home, but by accident, she ended up exposing the whole scheme.

Trying to make it look like Danny and Ada’s deaths weren’t connected, Alice even took the initiative to hand over some evidence.
Her hands shaking, she pulled a velvet pouch from her inner pocket, revealed a pendant, and gave it to the Cloudville cops.
“This… was a birthday present Fiona gave me last year,” she murmured.
Whenever Fiona came by, Alice always made sure to wear this pendant.
She glanced at Fiona with guilt. “I told you I sent it out to be cleaned, but I actually just hid it.”
Alice gripped the pendant so hard that her knuckles went white. “That day, when Ada fell, she clung to this pendant, struggling desperately. There might still be traces of her skin, maybe even some blood.”
After spilling everything, Alice let out a long, shaky breath, like a huge weight had finally been lifted off her shoulders. But her back just seemed even more hunched.
“Fiona,” she rasped, her voice thick with a tiredness that sounded like she’d already given up. “Your cousin… He’s just not like you. He can’t make money. I always had to cover for him.”
Fiona stood frozen, listening to her grandma’s confession in shock. Her head was spinning, and her knees nearly buckled beneath her.
She remembered the loving grandma who used to cuddle her and whisper fairy tales, who would gently rub her back when nightmares woke her up.
She couldn’t believe how that woman became this stranger, hiding dark secrets from her, caught up in something so twisted that it cost someone’s life.
It felt like her whole world was shattering right in front of her eyes.
The police slapped handcuffs on Alice and Danny and then marched them out to the squad car.
Nina watched the two of them being taken away, her heart aching a little for the messed-up family.
Simon said Alice was looking at charges for accidental manslaughter, covering up a crime, and destroying evidence. But since she was so old, the judge might cut her some slack when it came to sentencing.
Danny, though, was way deeper. Not only did he help hide the body, but he was also the brain behind the whole haunted house fraud scam. He was convicted of covering up a crime, maybe even conspiracy, and was in for a much harsher sentence.
Just before the Cloudville cops wrapped things up and headed out, Nina hugged the fish tank and quietly asked, “Can I take this little turtle home with me?”
The officer in charge of evidence grinned and nodded. “Of course you can! We honestly weren’t sure what to do with it, but if it’s going to you, Professor Summer, we know it’ll be in good hands!”

Chapter 255
:
The fat bat zipped over, chattering away. “Hey, don’t forget the gecko! I promised it a mosquito feast!”

Nina grinned and scooped the little gecko off her shoulder. “Of course it’s coming! The gecko totally saved the day. It’s our MVP!”
The bat swooped around the living room, wings flapping with excitement. “Sweet! I’ve got a permanent dinner pal now! We’re the ‘Lucky Bat-Gecko Duo’ now!”
Fat Bat dove down and landed on Nina’s shoulder, announcing with absolute confidence, “From now on, I’ll eat as much as the gecko eats! This time, I’m definitely going to lose weight!”
The gecko just gaped, mouth wide open, its long tail stuck awkwardly in midair. “W-wait a minute…” It cautiously reached out a tiny claw, making a little gesture. “I only need three bugs a day to be full.
“Are
you sure you want to eat as little as I do?”
Fat Bat immediately declared the team was over. “Three bugs? No way!” I’d go from a fat bat to a flat bat!”
As everyone was getting ready to leave, Fiona sat alone on the couch, looking so isolated in the big, empty living room.
She got up and walked over to Nina. “Ms. Summer, I’ve already arranged a driver to take you to your hotel.”
Fiona bowed deeply, her voice weary but genuine. “I’m sorry. I was really harsh to you and the police before, because I couldn’t handle the truth. I sincerely apologize.”
“I’ll make sure the Krill Algae Plan goes through as promised.” She looked up, her eyes red and her voice shaking. “Thanks. If you guys hadn’t exposed everything, I’d still be clueless. No one would’ve ever found Ada’s body.”
“Grandma and Danny could team up and scheme behind my back. Someone’s already died, and who knows what else could’ve happened down the line. Just thinking about it chills me to the bone.”
Alice was always so loving in her memories. She was still shocked that Alice had the guts to deal with a corpse.
That thought just broke Fiona’s heart and scared her half to death.
Nina gently patted Fiona’s shoulder, genuinely touched by her reaction.
Most people, when something like this happened, would blame the person who exposed the truth, thinking they ruined their comfortable life.
But Fiona wasn’t like that. She was clear-headed and brave, able to face reality and sort out right from wrong.
Someone like her, who called it like it was and knew right from wrong, was exactly the kind of person she wanted on her team for the long haul!
