Queenie's heart skipped a beat.
It wasn't just her; Lianne's face paled with sudden panic.
Forcing herself to stay calm, she pulled her lips into a stiff smile. "Zander, what are you doing back so soon?"
"I forgot a document. What were you two just talking about?"
"Nothing, Queenie and I were just chatting." Lianne's smile didn't reach her eyes, a flicker of guilt flashing across them.
"I heard everything."
Zander's expression was icy, his thin lips pressed into a hard line.
Just as Queenie's heart leaped into her throat, he followed up with, "It's not that I can't bear to dump her. But look at the state of her. If I kick her out, what is she going to do?"
He scoffed in frustration. "I've spoiled her completely. She can't handle a hard day's work and only cares about luxury. Even if I made her get a job delivering food, she'd probably get lost."
Queenie almost laughed.
So he had only caught the tail end of the conversation.
Zander shot her a sideways glance. "But I'm the one who spoiled her, so I guess I have to live with it."
"Zander, surely I'm not as useless as you make it sound. At the very least, I'm pretty, right?"
"What good are looks? All beauty, no substance."
That was exactly the response she was waiting for. "That's exactly why we're a perfect match. If I had the brains to match my looks, wouldn't you feel a little intimidated?"
Her retort left his face shifting through a spectrum of colors.
"Who are you calling useless? I..."
Her gaze sharpened. "You what?"
He swallowed his unfinished sentence. His eyes suddenly zeroed in on the two pieces of paper in her hand, and he reached out to snatch them. "What's that?"
