Not from a stranger. Luca’s voice, loud and echoing, like he had run here and had not decided to be quiet

about it.

How was that possible? He made it clear he wanted me gone. That I was a mistake. He wouldn’t be here Would he?

I looked back.

So did Callum.

I gasped. There he was.

Luca was cutting through the crowd, hair a mess, eyes locked on me the second he found me like the rest of the terminal did not exist.

What was he doing here? Why was he shouting?

People stared. A woman pulled her suitcase closer. Someone already had a phone up.

My body reacted before my pride did.

Relief. The stupid, traitorous pull that had lived in me for years. I wanted to walk straight to him. I hated that I wanted it. He had promised my brother he would never touch me again. And still my hands wanted to fist into his shirt.

Callum moved first.

He shoved him. A rough palm to the chest that said not here, not my sister, not again.

Luca took it. Did not swing back. His hands stayed open.

“Outside,” I said, fast. “Both of you. We are not doing this in here.”

They listened.

We went through the doors into the drop-off.

Callum turned on him the second the glass shut behind us.

“What are you doing here? You need to leave. I’m taking my sister home. You had your chance to say what you needed to. Why the hell did you follow us?”

Luca’s chest was still moving too fast. He looked at me, then at my brother, then at me again, like he was afraid I would vanish if he picked the wrong person to speak to first.

He chose Callum.

“I need to talk to Charlotte.” His voice was lower out here. Not calmer. “I know I messed up. I’m sorry. But I need to talk to her.”

He wanted to talk to me? Why? He had said everything he wanted to back in his suite. Why did he suddenly wish to say more? Was it guilt or something else?

“You lost your chance.”

“Callum.” Luca swore under his breath. I watched his throat move. The bruise on his jaw had darkened a bit since I wiped the blood off it. “I know you’re the one who looks after her. I know you don’t trust me You shouldn’t. Not after today. I promise you, I will never intentionally hurt her. Just let me talk to her this once. If she doesn’t want to see me again after what I have to say, take her. I won’t follow you. I won’t call. I’ll stand here and watch you go.”

My heart squeezed.

What had he come here to say?

Callum laughed once. It was not a kind sound.

“You already watched her go.”

“I was wrong. So fucking wrong.”

He was wrong? This side of Luca was very different to the version of him I saw in the suite. This was the side I’d known and fallen in love with. I was confused. What was happening?
