Chapter 271
-MARCO-
The house had gone quiet the way it only did after a fight no one had won.
Mom was asleep Dad was not I could hear him on the phone in the study, voice loud, the words Bellandi and lawyer coming up every few minutes.
Luca had texted me twice from his room.
I had not responded.
I stared at the ceiling.
Loretta Bellandi.
If I knew she was a Bellandi because of my mother, she no doubt knew I was a Vescari by now.
She was supposed to call.
That had been the agreement, such as it was. She would tell them. I would tell mine. We would speak before midnight and decide what the morning looked like. Midnight had come and gone. My phone was on the pillow. It had not lit up once.
I got up. The window was already open. The air outside was cold and did nothing to relax my mind.
I ran a hand down my face.
They would be giving her a hard time. I knew that without a call. I knew it because I had just sat in a kitchen while my father shouted and my mother gave me a look she’d never used before.
The Bellandis would not be softer on Loretta. Vittorio would want a divorce before morning. Just like my father was trying to organize. Enzo would say the word betrayal and mean it. And Loretta would be in a house where no one was going to let her be calm about it.
I picked up the phone. Nothing. I put it down. I picked it up again.
Could she have changed her mind about the entire thing now that she knew who I was?
I was in the hall before I had decided to be. Shoes. Keys. I checked on Luca before leaving.
“You’re not sleeping?” he asked, confused.
“I need to see her.”
That made him fall off the bed.
“What?” he demanded. “At this hour? Have you lost your bloody mind, Marco?”
‘She hasn’t called me,” I explained. “I know her family is giving her a hard time. I need to make sure she’s okay.”
“Can’t it wait a few more hours for the sun to come up?” he asked.
“No”
Luca looked at the keys. He looked at my face.
Whatever he saw there made him drop it. “Just don’t make things worse than it already is While I’m amused that you’ve gotten yourself in so much trouble, I’m still worried. You just got out of a serious accident. Don’t do something to get beaten by Loretta’s family now.”
“I’ll try my best Not making any promises”
I waved at him, then rushed outside to my car
I got in, shut the door and sat for a second with my hand in my lap. My head leaned back against the seat

reason I stopped driving
I started the engine. The gate opened on the code.
I was through it and on the road before my father could realize I’d left
The streets were empty I should have been careful especially since I was driving with one hand
I was not
I was anything but careful.
The accelerator went down under my foot and the car answered the way it always did. Pain went up the arm when I tried to use the wrong hand.
Fuck
I couldn’t get her out my mind.
Why was I so worried? It wasn’t like this was a real marriage.
Bellandi. The last name had been a warning my whole life.
Do not date one. Do not drink with one. Do not buy their wine.
There wasn’t any rules about marrying one since no one ever expected a Vescari male to do that.
Until now.
I had not read far enough down the page to see the surname that would set both houses on fire. She had not read mine either. Or she had, and she had signed anyway. I did not know which was worse, and I did not care. She had not called.
The Bellandi gate appeared in front of me. I stopped in front of it.
I put my hand on the horn and held it.
The sound was especially loud in the quiet. I let it go, then hit it again, then again.
A dog barked somewhere past the olives. A window opened on the upper floor and shut.
I hit the horn a fourth time and kept my hand there.
A light came on over the gate. Then another, at the front door.
I got out. I stood in the beam of my own headlights with the engine still running and I waited.
Impatiently.
Come on.
Where was she?
The gate did not open. A voice came through the intercom, male, furious, not hers.
“Who is it?”
“Marco Vescari, I said. “Open it.”
I wasn’t here for any greetings. I was here for Loretta. Only her.
Silence Then another voice, farther back, and the first one returning louder. “You have thirty seconds to leave before I call the police”
“Call them I’ll be here. I’m not leaving without my wife. I’ll tell the police you’re holding her hostage
The words did what I needed it to do. Even through a speaker, I felt their reaction
“She is not your-”
