Chapter 275

-MARCO-

I could hear my phone ringing.

This hour?

I checked it after taking a deep breath.

Luca.

Of course it was Luca. I let it go to the third buzz, then the fourth, thumb hovering over the screen.

I was hoping it wasn’t our mother using his phone to get in touch with me. It wouldn’t be the first time she’s pulled a stunt like this. At the same time, it could just be my brother calling to share something important.

I answered.

“Tell me you’re not still at the Bellandi estate,” he said.

“I’m home.”

A door shut hard on his end. I could hear all the shouting. I pressed the phone tighter to my ear and sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped.

“All hell is breaking loose,” Luca said. “Everyone is freaking out.”

I had been hoping they wouldn’t have noticed I was gone yet.

“What happened after I left?”

“They called. Vittorio, I think. Or the brother. I couldn’t hear properly over-” He broke off. Something crashed in the background. “According to them, you made a scene, woke the neighbors, woke the dogs, and then kidnapped their daughter out of their house while she was still in her nightclothes.”

She had said they would tell it that way. Not that she had come with me willingly.

“I didn’t kidnap her.”

“I know that.” He said it in an obvious tone. A chair scraped. “Our parents are not taking this well. They’re saying you’ve lost your mind.”

It felt like that. Like I’ve lost my mind for a girl I barely even knew.

I dragged a hand down my face.

“What else did they say?”

“They asked for her back.” He paused. In the gap I heard it clearer: my mother’s voice. “The family group chat

is going crazy, in case you haven’t looked.”

“Focus, Luca.”

“Right. Her family demanded we return their daughter. Dad told them she’s an adult and they should have taught her better from the start. Said he wasn’t going to clean up their mess.” A short, humorless breath. “That call didn’t go well. Nothing new. They still can’t stand each other. Only now they’ve found another reason.”

“Thanks,” I said. “For the update.”

“Marco.” he said, more serious this time. “You went to their house. You took their daughter. The marriage is a contract. You remember the contract, right? A piece of paper. Signatures. A date. None of this is real. So why are you doing all of this if it’s fake?”

Because I had looked at her and something in me had refused to leave her there, contract or not. Because ever since the accident, I haven’t been acting normal.

“I had to make it believable.”

“Believable.” He said it like he didn’t believe me. “Right. Well, you did a great job.”

“You don’t have to worry.”

“I do, though.” He disagreed. “Ever since the accident, you’ve been reckless. I’m a bit concerned. You sure you’re okay?”

“You’re reading too much into nothing.”

“Am I?” Another crash. Luca swore under his breath, away from the phone, then came back. “Hold on. Can you hear that? That’s mom. She’s-Marco, can you hear her?”

FUCK.

I could.

“I’m not talking to Marco.” Luca lied. “It’s Charlotte. Do you want to talk to her-”

“Tell me if Marco calls.” She snapped.

I could hear him sigh the second she left. “At least now I know Charlotte isn’t going to be the most hated daughter-in-law in the family. I should send you a gift. You took the title off her hands in one night. Great

job.”

“Shut it.”

“I’m joking.”

“You’re not.”

“I’m half joking.” I could hear the smile through the phone. “You chose a very interesting partner. The family
