Chapter 288
MARCO-
I answered on the third ring, still in the hall, still tasting her on my tongue and wanting more.
“What?”

I didn’t mean to sound irritated, but I was. I had been seconds from dragging those panties down and putting my mouth on her. Seconds from finding out exactly how wet she was, how she would sound when I licked her opening. The interruption felt like a hand around my throat.
It was probably a good thing. I would have done something Loretta would hate me for once she sobered up. I needed this distraction. Needed to get far away from her if I wanted to survive this night.
“Come home,” Luca said. No greeting. I could hear the worry in his voice, tight and sharp. “Right now. Mom and dad told grandfather everything. It’s bad. Loretta’s family is here. Her grandfather too. They’re in the garden and it’s not a conversation you want to miss. Get down here.”
I closed my eyes. Thinking about her swollen mouth. How she’d reached for me and begged for more. “How bad?”
“If you don’t come tonight, I can guarantee they’re coming there before morning. Move.”
“Fuck.” I was already walking. “I’m coming.”
The last thing I needed was them showing up here while Loretta was drunk and still shaking from my mouth on her. I hung up. The door to my room stayed shut. I did not open it. If I saw her again I would stay, and staying was no longer an option.
I grabbed the keys from the bowl by the side door, told Giovanni-who had appeared like a ghost with perfect timing, to keep an eye on the house and definitely on her, and not to let her leave no matter what she said. Then I got in the car.
The drive gave me enough time to remember exactly why I was an idiot.
I had kissed her. Not because she was falling and my mouth happened to be there. I had listed every reason not to, watched them fail one by one, and still put my tongue in her mouth on the floor of my bedroom while my hand was under her dress.
I’d sucked on her nipples like I owned them. Imagined them dripping with milk like a fucking animal.
I’d wanted it. I still wanted it, which was the problem, because wanting a Bellandi was not a hobby. It was a match dropped in a room that had been waiting for fire since before I was born.
Our families hated each other. That was no secret. Everyone knew it.
The contract had been something we both agreed to. And it clearly stated no sex. I had almost forgotten that was one of the rules. Damn it. I had almost broken it.
The house was lit when I pulled in. Every window had lights on despite how late it was. I could hear the shouting before I even killed the engine. I got out, straightened the shirt she had almost ripped open, and
walked in.

The hall was empty. The noise came from the back, through the dining terrace that opened onto the garden-the one that was usually quiet enough to hear the fountain. Not tonight.
I followed the voices.
My parents’ tones cut through first. My mother’s higher, furious. My father’s lower, trying and failing to stay controlled. Then another voice, sharper, older-Loretta’s grandfather, by the sound of it. I winced.
Fuck. It was bad.
I stepped out.
Everyone was there. My parents at one end of the long table. Luca standing, not sitting, which meant he had already tried to calm them and failed.
Across from them sat Loretta’s parents, her brother, and a lawyer I recognized.
They had brought a lawyer at this hour?
