Chapter 300
~LORETTA~
The brakes slammed so hard the seatbelt locked across my chest.

Enzo swore under his breath. A car had cut across the lane and stopped at an angle that blocked us completely.
For one second I thought it was an accident. Then the driver’s door opened and Marco stepped out.
He didn’t hesitate. He walked straight to my side of the car, yanked the door open, and reached in. His hands closed around my waist. He pulled me out and against him in one motion, close enough that my palms landed on his chest to keep my balance.
Just how quickly had he driven to get here?
“What the hell are you doing?” I hissed when I found my voice again.
Was I dreaming?
Did he really just cut in front of us like that?
“Acting like I’m in love with you.” His mouth was right against my ear. The softness of his voice moved through me. I shivered before I could stop it. His arm stayed firm around my back. “Smile if you can. Your brother’s watching. It’s important that you look happy to see me.”
I was not happy. I was still hurt and annoyed from earlier, and then I saw all those articles with him and Caterina.
I shoved at his chest, not hard enough to move him. “Aren’t you busy taking care of Caterina?”
He winced. The reaction was fast. Before he could answer, Enzo’s door opened.
“Get your hands off her,” Enzo said. He came around the hood fast. “You let another woman put her hands on you in front of my sister and then you disappear. There are articles everywhere saying she’s the one you never got over. If you actually gave a damn about Loretta you would have announced the marriage weeks ago instead of hiding her like something you’re ashamed of.”
Marco’s arm didn’t loosen. His body went still against mine. “Why the fuck would I ever be embarrassed about Loretta?”
“Your family has hated mine for years,” Enzo shot back. “You may have convinced her this is real. You haven’t convinced me. Those photos didn’t come out of nowhere. That girl is clearly not over you and you’re using my sister to get her back into your life.”
My heart squeezed tightly at the possibility of those things being true.
Marco looked at him for a long second. Then he reached into his pocket with his free hand, pulled out his phone, and opened the camera.
He angled it so both of us were in frame and hit record.
“Hey everyone,” he said, “I would like you to meet my wife, Loretta Vescari. We’ve been married for a little while now and I’ve been an idiot about how quiet we’ve kept it. There have been some photos circulating about someone from my past. She is not part of my life anymore. She hasn’t been for a long time. Loretta is. She’s the one I chose. She’s the one I come home to. Anyone spreading anything else can stop. I’m not interested in clearing up rumors about a woman who left years ago when I have a wife standing right here, so please, stop spreading rumors.”
He paused. His thumb brushed the side of my waist once. “She’s mine. I’m hers. That’s the only story that matters. If you see old pictures, ignore them. If you hear anything else, ignore that too. I’ll post a proper photo later. For now, this is me saying it clearly so no one has to guess.”
He stopped the recording. The phone lowered after he pressed post.
I froze.

Did he really just release that video?

My face felt hot enough to burn. Enzo stood with his mouth slightly open, the argument gone out of him.
Traffic moved slowly around the blocked lane. Someone honked once and kept going.
Marco slipped the phone back into his pocket. He looked at Enzo. “If we’re done here, I’m taking my wife home.”
Enzo didn’t answer right away. His eyes moved between us. Whatever he had been ready to say stayed within. He gave a short nod that looked like it cost him and stepped back toward his car.
Marco’s hand stayed at my waist as he guided me to the passenger side of his own car.
He opened the door. I got in because my legs were not entirely steady and because arguing in the middle of the road felt like a bad idea.
He closed it, walked around, and slid behind the wheel.
The engine was already running. He pulled away from the shoulder without looking back.
I stared at the dashboard. My pulse was still racing. The place where his arm had been around me felt warm. He had said the words out loud, on camera, with my brother standing right there.
He had called me his wife and told whoever would see the video that the old stories with Caterina were finished.
“You didn’t have to do that,” I said.
