Chapter 304
~ENZO~
I had not wanted to come. I hated being around the Vescari family.
The last time I tried to put distance between my sister and Marco, he had stopped traffic in the middle of the road, pulled out his phone, and announced to the world that she was his wife while I stood there with my mouth open like a man who had just lost a bet he never placed.
At first I had agreed with everyone else. He did not look at her the way a man looks at a woman he intends to keep. But then he had said the words so easily, with no hesitation. Then posted it without a second thought. Thated that I had been impressed. I hated that the impression had stuck.
Both families had decided the only way to fix the mess was to sit in the same room and pretend negotiation was still possible.
My grandfather had not shared air with Marco’s great-aunt in years. Tonight they sat at opposite ends of the long table, spines straight, eyes fixed anywhere but on each other. The rest of us filled the chairs between them.
I ended up directly across from Giulia. Of course I did. The universe seemed to have a sense of humor and a short list of targets.
She had looked at me once when she sat down, the kind of look that registered my presence the way a person registers a stain on a shirt, then returned her attention to her plate. We had been glaring at each other since the soup arrived.
Neither of us bothered to hide it.
“Did they have to bring you along today?” she said. Her voice stayed low enough that only the people nearest us could hear. “Or do you simply appear whenever someone mentions your sister’s name?”
“I ask myself the same question every time Matteo drags you somewhere public.” I reached for my wine.
“I wish he had better taste in friends.” She said with disgust.
“I don’t know what he sees in you,” I admitted. “He’s had plenty girls in the past. So many of them. Nice girls. Quiet ones. But yet he chose you.”
She huffed, “he sees plenty.”
We stared at each other. The tension sat between us, sharp and familiar, the same shape it always took when we were forced into the same room.

I did not like her. She talked too much. She remembered every stupid thing I had ever said in front of Matteo and brought it up at the worst moments, usually when I was

already trying to keep my temper. She was also, unfortunately, close enough that I Could see the exact shape of her mouth when she was annoyed-the way the lower lip pressed flat before she spoke. I looked away first. The soup had gone cold.
“I also don’t know what my sister sees in your brother,” I said. “She could do better.”
Giulia stood so fast her chair scraped hard against the floor. The sound cut through the low murmur of the room. She pointed at me across the table.
“How dare you? My brother is a star. He has won more races than most drivers see in a career. He has podiums in Monaco, Silverstone, and Monza to name a few. He has carried teams that had no business finishing in the points. He is the reason half the sponsors on that car still write checks. You wish you could touch what he has already done, and you are sitting here talking about him like he is some mistake your sister made in the dark.”
“He crashed like an amateur,” I said. The words left before I could stop them.” Everyone saw it.”
I had taken it too far. I knew it the second her face went tight. Something in me refused to stop once I started. Especially around her. I didn’t seem to have control.
She reached for the nearest wine glass without looking at it. The liquid was dark and already half gone. She stepped around the corner of the table, and dumped the contents straight down the front of my shirt.
Cold liquid soaked through to my skin in an instant. A few drops hit my jaw and slid lower. The smell of it rose between us, sharp and sweet.
“Ah yes,” she said. Her voice was pleased. “That’s where this bad tasting wine belongs.”
I was on my feet before I thought about it. The chair legs scraped again.
I reached across the narrow space, caught her by the waist, and pulled. She came forward with a startled sound, one hand catching the edge of the table for balance, the other landing on my shoulder.
The force of it brought her between my legs, close enough that her thighs pressed against the outside of mine. Her pulse jumped under my palms. I felt it through the thin fabric of her dress.
Up close her mouth was right there, parted, furious, and unfairly pretty. Wine dripped from the collar of my shirt onto the front of dress.
Neither of us moved to wipe it away.
“You-” she started.
I didn’t think twice as I started rubbing the front of my shirt against her dress. If she wanted to play dirty-it was only then that I realized I was rubbing my chest against her breasts.

Both mothers reached us at once before I had chance to truly let that thought settle.
Mine grabbed my arm above the elbow, fingers tight enough to leave marks. “Enzo.” Her voice cut through the room, low and sharp. “Let go. Now.”
Giulia’s mother took her by the elbow and pulled in the opposite direction. The space between us opened only because both women insisted on it.
Giulia’s hands slid off my shoulders. Mine stayed on her waist a second longer than they should have before I forced them open.
“Enough,” my mother said. She did not raise her voice, but the table went quiet around us. “Both of you. Sit down and behave. This is not the place.”
She looked from me to Giulia and back. “I understand that none of us like each other. That is clear to everyone in this room. But you still need to have self-control. We are here because two families are trying to keep a situation from becoming worse, not because the two of you need an audience for whatever this is.”
Giulia’s mother said something quieter and firmer in Italian, the words directed at her daughter.
Giulia’s cheeks were flushed. She stepped back until her calves hit the chair, but she did not sit immediately. Her mother kept hold of her elbow.
“Giulia,” she said, switching to English. “You will sit. You will apologize for dumping wine, or you will leave the table. I do not care which you prefer, but you will not do this again.”
