Chapter 307
~ENZO~
Practice had just ended when my phone lit up with my mother’s name.
I stepped away from the field before Tanswered, the rest of the team still stretching out the last of the drills.
Matteo was already heading toward the sideline where the drinks were set out, towel around his neck, laughing at something one of the keepers said.
“Have you spoken to your sister again?” my mother asked the second I picked up.
No greeting. That was all she called to ask these days: Constantly. My family truly were losing their minds over this entire thing. A Vescari and a Bellandi. Who would have ever thought?
“I’m at practice. I don’t want to do this right now.”
“You need to do whatever you can to end this. They cannot stay married. The video made everything worse. Your grandfather is furious. Fix it before our family name has to suffer.”
I wiped sweat off my forehead with my shirt and stared out at the empty stretch in front of me. “Would it actually be so bad if they stayed married?”
I wasn’t sure why I’d asked it. Maybe I was beginning to see that my sister truly liked Marco. I didn’t see the point in trying to break them up if he actually made her happy.
The silence on the other end lasted half a second. Then her voice rose. “Do not start. Do not say things like that. They are not staying married. Find a way to talk to her. Remind her what this family has already lost because of them. I will not have this conversation again.”
She hung up before I could answer. I knew that was a lie. This topic would not be over anytime soon.
I stared at the dark screen for a moment, then shoved the phone into my bag harder than necessary. Matteo was waiting by the cooler with two bottles already open. He grinned when he saw my face.
“Let me guess. Your mother called about your sister and the F1 driver.”
“Of course,” I growled. “What else has she been calling about recently?”
“I should have dated your sister,” he said, taking a long drink. “That would have been entertaining.”
I laughed, short and sharp. “I would have killed you if you ever touched my sister. And you’re seeing Giulia now, so maybe don’t joke about dating anyone else while she’s on

her way over. She looks like the aggressive kind.”
She really did look like she could knock a man out if she really wanted to.

Matteo’s grin didn’t fade. He had always been a player. Half the team still talked about the hours he used to disappear with whoever was closest after matches.
I still didn’t fully understand how he had ended up with Marco’s sister and settled down. Even now his eyes tracked one of the staff girls walking past with a tray of water bottles. He caught me looking and shrugged like it was nothing.
“Get used to it,” he said, and clapped me on the back. “She likes coming. If you know what I mean.”
froze. Not because he’d said it. Because I didn’t like the reaction my body gave to that
comment.
Heat crawled up the back of my neck before I could shut it down. I took a drink just to have something to do with my hands.
Giulia appeared a moment later, bag over her shoulder, sunglasses pushed up into her hair. She spotted us from halfway across the sideline and her steps slowed.
For a second she just stood there, the late sun catching the ends of her hair, watching me like I’d somehow invaded her space even though this was my practice.
Her mouth tightened. Her shoulders went stiff. The glare was already waiting by the time she reached us.
She kissed Matteo once, quick and almost distracted, then turned her head and looked straight at me.
“Why is he here?” she muttered.
“It’s my practice,” I said. “You’re the one who keeps showing up.”
“I’m here for him.” She nodded toward Matteo without taking her eyes off me. “You’re just impossible to avoid. Like a stain on my shirt.”
The words were sharp, but her gaze dropped for half a second-to my mouth, then lower, to the damp fabric of my shirt, before she forced it back up.
Color touched the tops of her cheeks. She hated that I’d noticed. I could see it in the way her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.
“Funny. I was thinking the same thing about you.”
Matteo sighed, amused. “Can the two of you go five minutes without this?”
“No,” Giulia and I said at the same time.
She folded her arms, the motion pulling her shirt tighter across her chest. “Your sister is still married to my brother. Maybe worry about that instead of standing here annoying me.”

“I’m working on it.” I picked up my bag. The wine stain from the dinner was long gone, But the memory of her waist under my hands was not. “I’m out. I’ll see you later. Two seconds of her is already too much.”
Giulia’s eyes flashed. “Two seconds is generous. Most days I can’t even stand the first one.”
“Then stop looking at me like that.
Her chin lifted. “Like what?”
“Like you’re deciding whether to-” I cut myself off. Matteo was watching us now, one brow raised. I adjusted the strap of my bag and stepped back. “Never mind.”
“Finish the sentence,” she said, voice low. “Or are you only brave when you’re grabbing me in the middle of a dinner?”
