Vivica was once again left speechless. He was such a handsome, elegant man—why did he have to have a mouth like that?
She tried to let it go, but she couldn't. Once the pain in her cheek subsided a little, she turned to him. "Are all lawyers like you?"
Joseph was already focused on his laptop, tapping away, but he answered her. "Like what?"
"So sharp-tongued."
"I speak facts. If the truth stings, it means you're too sensitive."
Vivica rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath, "No wonder he's single, despite being successful, handsome, and rich. What woman can possibly put up with that mouth?"
She thought she had spoken quietly, but Joseph had heard her. "Thank you for the compliment. But my relationship status is a choice, not a consequence."
"Sure it is," Vivica mumbled again. "That's what anyone would say."
Just then, Joseph's phone rang, and he answered it, launching into a work-related discussion.
Vivica had been about to ask if he'd had the car she stained this morning cleaned, but she stopped herself. With Roderic right there, she couldn't bear another round of social humiliation.
After his call, Joseph went back to his computer. Vivica fell silent, leaning back against the plush seat, her gaze drifting to his profile as he worked. He looked so serious, so proper, so handsome. A man is most attractive when he's focused, she thought, a little helplessly. Even knowing how venomous his words could be, she found herself captivated by his charm.
The ride was smooth and comfortable. Weakened by her period and exhausted from the day's ordeal, Vivica felt her eyelids grow heavy. Her mind and body shut down at the same time, and she drifted off to sleep without realizing it.
Joseph withdrew his hand, his expression returning to its usual cool composure as he nodded toward the window. "We're at the hospital. You go on up to be with Chaim. I have some other matters to attend to."
His nonchalant demeanor made her racing heart quiet down again. "Oh, okay. Thank you," she said politely, then turned and opened the car door.
The door clicked shut behind her, and the car pulled away immediately, without a moment's hesitation.
Vivica stood there for a second, then raised her hand to touch her own forehead. There you go again, overthinking things, she chided herself. He was probably just worried she was about to pass out in his car. After all, she'd already ruined one of his cars this morning; he likely didn't want a repeat performance in another.
She turned and headed for the entrance, a heavy sigh escaping her lips. She thought about the dirty clothes she had taken home to wash, only to return to the hospital hours later, bruised and battered. What a day.
