She never wanted to go back to that 'home' again. And she certainly never wanted to set foot in that master bedroom. The thought of that disgusting pair getting intimate in her bed made her want to burn the whole house to the ground.
But that was just a fantasy. She was more rational than that. The house was valuable. The best course of action was to sell it, pay off the remaining mortgage, and keep the rest of the money. She would have to discuss the plan with Joseph when she got the chance.
When she entered the hospital room, both Ruby and Chaim gasped at the sight of her face.
Vivica explained that she had taken a nasty fall. Chaim, being a child, believed her. But Ruby's eyes narrowed with suspicion. She leaned in closer and whispered, "Ms. Lynn, someone hit you, didn't they?"
Vivica gave a bitter smile and admitted, "It was Fletcher. He was violent."
"What?" Ruby's eyes widened in shock. "How could he? That's awful! What happened?"
Vivica was in no mood to elaborate. "It's a long story," she said evasively. "But he's paying the price for it."
Noticing the time, she added, "Ruby, you can head home for the day. Just be sure to come in early tomorrow. I need to get to work on time."
"Of course." Ruby smiled, said goodbye to Chaim, and left with her bag.
As she walked out of the room, she ran into another caregiver she had befriended over the past few days.
"Heading out?" the friend called out.
Ruby hurried over, a conspiratorial look on her face, and linked arms with her friend. "You won't believe it," she whispered. "My employer got beaten up. Her face is a total mess."
The other caregiver gasped. "That's terrible! Who did it?"
"Who do you think? The kid's father! I bet he found out she's having an affair with that lawyer. What man could stand being cheated on like that? It's no wonder he hit her."
"Tsk, tsk. I just don't get young people these days. No morals at all..."
Her little boy was sitting up in bed, his nose bleeding profusely. He was trying to pinch it shut with his small hands, but blood was streaming through his fingers, staining his clothes. His face was a mask of confusion and panic.
Vivica rushed to his side, grabbing tissues to press against his nose while simultaneously hitting the call button for the nurse.
"Don't be scared, sweetie, the doctor will be here in a second. It's okay."
Her own heart was pounding with fear, but she forced herself to remain calm for him.
A doctor arrived quickly and administered first aid, asking a few questions as he worked. Chaim, ever the trouper, answered obediently without crying, despite his fear. Once the bleeding stopped, the doctor turned to Vivica.
"Ms. Lynn, we've got it under control for now. The air is very dry in the winter, which can irritate the nasal passages. Sometimes just rubbing the nose can rupture the small capillaries. With his low platelet count, his body can't stop the bleeding on its own, which is why this happens. Try to remind him not to rub or pick his nose. If it feels dry, you can ask a nurse to help moisturize it."
Vivica listened, her gaze fixed on her son. She knew nosebleeds were a common symptom of leukemia, but seeing him covered in his own blood was still terrifying.
