"Not at all," Melanie replied. "It's you who has a good heart, letting him spend time with us."
Sheridan, while feeding Chaim a spoonful of food, chimed in. "You see? Now that this old woman has a grandson—even if he's not our own blood—she's smiling all day long. The doctor says her health has improved remarkably these past two days."
Vivica smiled and nodded. "Yes, I can see she's looking much better."
“If they ever find out he is their biological grandson,” she thought, “they'll be even more overjoyed.”
Melanie sighed softly. "I feel that if Lennon's spirit is watching over us, he wouldn't want me to be so broken. Now that we have this little grandson who looks so much like him, I can't help but feel that this was his doing. He was afraid I was too heartbroken to carry on, so he sent Chaim to be with me in a different way."
Just the day before, Vivica had taken some time to look up news articles about Lennon's death. He wasn't just handsome with an air of integrity; his character was impeccable. He had earned numerous merits during his service and had even saved a stranger's life during one of his leaves.
With the Baird family's resources, Lennon could have chosen a much easier path, but he hadn't. He had been dedicated and strict with himself.
He had been a truly good person, deep down. It was cruel that fate had taken such an outstanding, selfless hero so young.
Melanie's words brought a lump to Vivica's throat. "You're right. It must be Lennon watching over you, arranging for us to meet."
Chaim looked up curiously. "Mommy, who are you talking about? I've never met him."
Vivica smiled down at her son.
She was struck by how someone of Melanie's stature could be so considerate. She had gone out of her way to explain, taking responsibility for the coddling just to ease Vivica's mind. The Bairds, she thought again, were truly a family of class.
"Yes, Dr. Tyson was here this morning and said chemotherapy can affect his appetite and cause nausea," Melanie continued. "He needs extra nutrition now, or his body won't be able to handle it. In fact, why don't we have Chaim eat with us every day? We can help make sure he eats well."
Vivica was taken aback. "Mrs. Baird, I couldn't possibly. It would disturb your rest."
"Not at all," Sheridan interjected with a nod toward his wife. "Having the boy around gives this old woman an appetite. It's a win-win."
Vivica still hesitated. She felt deeply uncomfortable accepting so much from them when they ‘weren't’ even related.
