"It's settled then," Melanie declared warmly. "From now on, we'll take care of his meals. You have work and enough troubles at home to deal with. You can trust us to look after him, and we'll call a doctor immediately if anything comes up."
She then turned to Chaim. "Would you like to come eat with Grandma and Grandpa every day?"
Chaim nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! Thank you, Grandma and Grandpa."
Vivica laughed. "Well, you certainly don't waste any time being polite."
The elderly couple chuckled. "There's no need for him to be polite with us. We couldn't be happier."
After lunch, Melanie needed her afternoon nap, and Chaim had to go back for his medication. Vivica said goodbye to the Bairds and carried him back toward the south wing. They chatted on the way.
"Sweetheart, do you like Grandpa and Grandma a lot?"
"I do! They're so much nicer to me than my old grandpa!"
The "old grandpa" he was referring to was clearly Fletcher's father. Fletcher's mother had passed away when he was too young to remember her.
Hearing her son's words made Vivica happy. It was amazing, she thought, how powerful the bonds of blood could be. Even without ever meeting, there was an instant, natural affection.
"Mommy."
"Yes?"
"When will I get better?"
"What's wrong? Are you feeling very sick?"
Chaim shook his head, then nodded. After a pause, he said, "Grandpa told me that when I'm all better, he's going to take me to their house to play. He said their house is super, super big, like a whole mountain, and they have everything there!"
