Jay observed the entire exchange from the sidelines. Franco's explicit orders were to let Petty do whatever she wanted, intervening only if she physically collapsed.
Petty tossed the blanket aside. "Willing to poison yourself just to threaten Franco... Laura, I never realized you were this vicious. You wouldn't even spare yourself. But don't worry, I won't let you die from the poison. What I just fed you was the antidote."
"Death is too easy for you."
Stripped of any ability to fight back, Laura let her arms fall limply onto the mattress, crying as she forced a laugh. "What does it matter? The death penalty is waiting for me anyway."
Petty pulled a tissue from the nightstand and calmly wiped her hands. "For the sake of the friendship we used to have, I'll hire the best defense attorney money can buy. I will make absolutely sure you get life in prison, so you can spend your days rotting in a cell while you watch my son, Manley, grow up."
She tossed the crumpled tissue onto Laura's chest and turned on her heel, walking out.
The door clicked shut, sealing the room in total silence, as if the woman on the bed were already a corpse.
Petty stood quietly in the hallway. After a long moment, she asked softly, "Do you know how she poisoned me?"
Jay glanced at her pale profile. He hesitated for a second before answering. "She bribed an employee at the place that makes those savory pastries you love."
Tears slipped down Petty's cheeks. So that was it.
Jay didn't need to explain the rest. It all made perfect, devastating sense.
During her pregnancy, her appetite had been terrible, so she bought those pastries frequently. The slow-acting poison went undetected at first, accumulating in her system over time, ultimately hurting her baby.
Petty walked slowly down the corridor toward her own room. Suddenly, she stopped. Jay halted beside her, his gaze lingering on her incredibly fragile silhouette.
She kept her head down, lost in her thoughts.
Night had fully descended, and they were standing near a large window showcasing a bright moon.
The silvery moonlight cascaded over her as she parted her lips. "Are you really Malcom?"
A sharp glint flashed in Jay's deep brown eyes.
Petty glanced up at the moon before continuing down the hall, leaving behind a murmured whisper.
"The night it rained... right before I was supposed to leave for Coralia. Downstairs at my apartment."
