Seeing everyone so on edge, Lexie couldn’t help but ask Kaelis and Gary what was up.

No matter how much she pressed them, Kaelis and Gary just wouldn’t say a word, acting like nothing was wrong and sticking
close to her in silence.
Even though Kaelis, the High Priest, and Gary kept quiet, Lexie could totally sense the tense vibe hanging over the Snow Wolf Clan.
Especially the guards stationed outside her room, their faces were grim, eyes sharp, looking like they were ready to jump into action at any moment.
That night, the usually quiet snow wolves set massive bonfires ablaze amidst the swirling snow and wind. The flames were so bright, they lit up the whole night sky.
The howling wind and the tense beastmen made the atmosphere feel even more off, adding a strange edge to the whole
clan.
The bonfires burned fiercer than ever in the storm, but everything around was eerily silent, only the occasional beastly roar shattered the uneasy calm.
Lexie lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
Just as she was lying there, wide awake, Gary’s concerned voice drifted over from the couch not far away.
“Lex, can’t sleep?” he asked.
“Nope. I napped too much during the day, so now I’m wide awake,” Lexie replied.
With that, Lexie sat up, threw on her thick cloak, slipped on her shoes, and was about to head outside.
Seeing Lexie about to leave, Gary, who was half–reclining on the couch, immediately got up and blocked her way.
“Lex, you can’t go out right now,” he said.
“Why not? I just want to stretch my legs for a bit. What’s the big deal?” Lexie shot back.
Cary didn’t even blink before coming up with a story.
“Lex, the temperature’s dropped like crazy tonight, especially now, it’s absolutely freezing out there. The wind’s so strong. and you’re so skinny, what if you get blown away? How am I supposed to catch you if you go flying off?” he teased.
She gave him a look that screamed, ‘Are you kidding me?‘ and sized him up from head to toe.
Gary couldn’t help but feel his confidence waver under her stare, like he’d just said something really dumb.
“What’s wrong? Lex, why are you looking at me like that?” he asked.
“Gary, seriously? You think I’m dumb or something? Like I don’t know it’s freezing out there?
“Yeah, the wind’s crazy, but look at me. I’m not some little kid! You really think I’d get blown away? Lexie shot back, putting
out her chest.
She thumped her chest, all fired up.

“But Lex, the wind’s crazy out there! I just care about you, okay? I don’t want you to freeze!” Gary said, putting on his best puppy–dog eyes.
“How could you doubt my love for you, Lex? You’re really hurting my poor heart…” he added, dragging out his words in an exaggerated, dramatic way.
Listening to Gary deliberately stretch out his words and watching him tug at his own coat with that pitiful puppy–dog face, Lexie felt like he was practically stealing her soul, she was powerless against that act.
‘Seriously, he really is a fox beastman. With that kind of seductive charm, anyone would fall for him,‘ Lexie thought, her heart fluttering.
But seeing how stubborn Gary was about not letting her go out, Lexie, not wanting to trouble him, just gave up on the idea.
“Alright, alright, I won’t go out, okay? Can I at least stand by the window and look outside?” she said.
“Then I’ll keep you company, Lex,” Gary replied.
And with that, he grabbed Lexie’s hand, his fox eyes squinting into happy little crescents as he smiled.
Watching Gary put on that adorable act right in front of her, Lexie found herself staring at his face, thinking how ridiculously good–looking he was in the soft, golden glow of the lamp.
‘Seriously, with a face like that, Gary should be into someone way more special, not just an ordinary little female like me,‘ Lexie thought, feeling a bit self–conscious.
Noticing Lexie staring at him, Gary leaned in, bringing his face close to hers and said softly.
“Are you checking me out, Lex?” he teased.
“Of course I am. Gary, you’re so ridiculously handsome, why would a guy like you ever fall for someone as ordinary as me?” Lexie replied, feeling a bit insecure.
“Honestly, I have no idea either. When I first met you, even knowing you were the only female in this world, I just thought you were ugly, like, seriously ugly,” Gary said, not holding back at all.
I couldn’t figure it out. How could my brother possibly fall for someone so ugly? Was it just because you’re the only female around, and he literally had no other options?” he went on, shaking his head in disbelief.
“I mean, my brother’s always been smart and super self–disciplined, so how did he end up falling for you?” Gary said, still sounding totally confused.
“Or maybe it’s just that I hated how Cristia was giving you all his attention. I’m supposed to be his rival, right? So all his focus should be on me, not you,” he added, a little jealous.
“Maybe it was just me being stubborn, but I loved picking fights with you. I kept calling you an ugly female, always throwing
that at you.
“And you? You were always talking back, messing with me, never letting me get the last word.
“We were always bickering and squabbling, couldn’t stand each other at all. But then you saved me, and that’s how we ended up forming a mate bond.
“Up until then, I honestly thought we were just a pair of frenemies, always at each other’s throats, never in a million years did I think we’d actually catch feelings for each other.
“But not everything in life is up to us, you know?
