‘Seriously, just be careful out there. I don’t need any gifts,” Lexie said, her eyes drifting over Gary’s combat suit. “But Gary. where are you headed?”
Her concern was obvious as she looked him up and down, worry flickering in her eyes.
Where am I going?” Gary repeated with a playful pout.
He slung an arm around her shoulder, pointed at Cristia standing off to the side, and complained with a pitiful look on his
ace.
Lex, Cristia thinks I’m way too clingy with you, so he gave me this mission just to get rid of me for a while,” Gary whined. Lex, can you please talk to Cristia? I don’t want to go. I just want to be glued to you all day, every day, okay?” he pleaded, iving her his best puppy–dog eyes.
seeing Gary acting all shameless, Lexie figured he probably wasn’t up to anything serious.
he shoved him aside with a roll of her eyes, sounding a little impatient.
Go on, Gary. Since Cristia’s got you on a mission, just get it done,” she said.
Don’t worry, I’ll be right here waiting for you to come back.”
Hearing that, Gary just sidled up to her, grinning.
But when his eyes met Cristia’s, the weight between the two brothers was almost palpable.
Gary had no idea if he’d make it back alive this time.
till, it was a near–suicide mission, and someone had to do it. If he didn’t step up, someone else would have to.
And if risking himself could save thousands of others, he’d rather be the one to take the risk
When Gary looked away from Cristia, he was back to his usual laid–back, cheeky self in front of Lexie.
Lex, are you gonna miss me when I’m gone?” he teased, flashing her a playful grin.
Miss you? Yeah, right. You’re coming back, aren’t you? Why would I miss you?” Lexie shot back, rolling her eyes
Lex, you’re so heartless! How could you not miss me? Seriously, I haven’t even left yet, and I’m already missing you, Gary whined, putting on his best puppy–dog eyes.
I’m telling the truth! If you don’t believe me, just put your hand on my chest. See? I’m not lying,” he continued
As he spoke, he grabbed Lexie’s hand and tried to place it over his chest, acting like a clingy boy
Seeing Gary being so playful, Lexie didn’t take his mission seriously at all
She yanked her hand back and gave him a shove, trying to get him moving
This damn fox, always up to something. Lexie thought to herself, shaking her head.
“Here, Lex. This is for you, Gary said, suddenly handing her a memory chip

Lexie blinked. “What’s this?”
Lexie stared at the memory chip Gary had just handed her, not sure what was going on.
“An elder who’s really fond of you asked me to pass this along. Go ahead, take it, just a little something from him,” Gary explained.
“Oh, sure. Next time you see him, tell him I said thanks,” she replied.
“No problem,” Gary replied with a grin.
Just as he was about to leave, he suddenly stepped forward. Before Lexie could even react, he leaned in and kissed her on the lips. Then he turned and walked away without looking back.
Seeing Gary leave so decisively, Lexie just stood there, staring at his back, totally stunned.
She clutched the memory chip Gary had just given her, her other hand lingering on her lips for a long moment, still in a daze.
It wasn’t until Gary and the beastmen from the Nine–Tailed Fox Clan had disappeared into the distance that she finally came back to herself, worry flickering in her eyes as she spoke up.
“Cristia, Gary’s heading out on this mission… He’ll be safe, right?”
“Don’t worry. He’ll be just fine. Nothing’s going to happen to him,” Cristia said, his voice calm and reassuring.
Cristia’s voice was steady and deep, as if he was trying to comfort Lexie, but maybe he was also trying to calm his own
nerves.
Cristia was supposed to lead the mission, but Gary insisted on going himself.
Gary, who was usually so laid–back and never took anything seriously, was more resolute than Cristia had ever seen him.
Gary said he’d fought the Bloodthirsty Beasts before and knew them better than anyone. He insisted he was the best person for the mission.
But the real reason was, if Cristia went after the Bloodthirsty Beasts, Gary would have to handle all the Nine–Tailed Fox Clan’s affairs.
Everybody knew that Gary hated dealing with all the boring clan business. It was the main reason Gary had insisted on taking on the Bloodthirsty Beasts himself.
But most importantly, Gary was secretly protecting his brother, even if no one noticed.
It seemed his little brother, who had always been goofing off and never serious, had finally learned what it meant la step up and shield someone else.
But there was no way Cristia would ever let Gary die, not in a million years
After Gary left, and with Cristia acting kind of strange. Lexie strolled around the garden for a bit before heading back to her
room.
Cristia walked Lexie back to her room, but then ran off to handle some busine
Once the room was quiet, Lexie dialed up Austin’s Optic Brain. After a long wait, someone finally picked up
