When William finally came to a halt, the chatter around Lexie was overwhelming. She unsteadily slid off his back, her stomach churning like a washing machine.
The very next moment, she rushed to a nearby bush and hurled her guts out.
“Ugh!”
Lexie clung to a tree trunk, barely holding herself up as she retched again and again. None of the students lined up managed to catch a glimpse of her face.
When the other students saw Lexie acting all pampered and soft, their eyes were full of contempt.
“Tch! What a pathetic excuse for a beastman,‘ someone snorted.
‘So useless. How did she even get accepted into the top military academy?‘ another scoffed.
‘The dorm’s barely a walk from the field! She got carried here, and now she’s puking her guts out like some knocked–up chick,‘ someone else jeered.
‘Tch! So embarrassing,‘ another muttered.
Just as the other beastmen were shooting obvious looks and talking smack about Lexie as she kept retching, she finally straightened up, her face pale as she turned around. Instantly, those who’d been mocking her for being so delicate plastered on friendly grins.
The reason? Every single one of them knew exactly who Lexie was.
Hill wasn’t just tight with Samuel Tucker, the student council president—he was also roommates with Eric Thorne, the resident genius with a razor–sharp tongue.
The one protecting her was none other than the young chief of the Eagle Clan. Plus, with Hill’s powerful ability to heal gene diseases, he was already a campus celebrity without even trying.
Even though Hill was a campus celebrity, he was always holed up in his dorm, so none of the cadets ever got a
chance to meet him.
But now, none of them could believe it–Hill, the beastman from the Mermaid Clan, had actually been assigned to their freshman boot camp squad.
Pretty much every cadet here had some kind of gene disease, even if it was just a mild case. And even if they lucked out and didn’t have it themselves, their families probably did. Seriously, who doesn’t have someone dealing with it?
Those artificial female bots could actually help cure gene diseases for beastmen, at least in some ways.
The low–end ones were pretty much useless, and the fancy high–end bots? Total luxury items for the rich.
For regular families like theirs, affording a high–end artificial female bot was just a pipe dream.

Even if the whole family pooled all their resources and somehow managed to afford a high–end artificial female bot,
those top–tier female bots had to get real close with beastmen to help cure their gene diseases.
Can you imagine the whole family having to share one of those bots? That’s just gross!
They’d long given up hope on those fancy high–end female bots–no way regular folks could afford them. But Hill, the Mermaid Clan beastman? He was the one everyone pinned their hopes on.
First off, his healing was totally free. Second, he could cure gene diseases without any awkward intimacy or getting too close.
With perks like that, it was no wonder all the cadets‘ eyes sparkled when they saw Lexie.
Lexie had no idea about all the little schemes the other cadets had going on in their heads. She just picked her spot in the front row based on her height.
She had just taken her place when Serenus White, the instructor, strode onto the field.
File in behind him came a whole squad of instructors. Just like Serenus, every single one wore icy, commanding expressions, marching in perfect sync with steely eyes–like a team of elite warriors.
Each instructor gave off a vibe that made you want to stand at attention, making everyone straighten up without even thinking about it.
Their arrival cranked the intensity of the whole training ground up to eleven.
Lexie, in the front row, could feel the intense pressure from the instructors bearing down on her, making her nerves stand on end.
‘I can’t mess this up. I have to keep it together and not make a fool of myself in front of everyone, Lexie reminded herself.
The instructors‘ intimidating aura was so strong that as soon as their eyes swept over the crowd, every cadet stood ramrod straight–even before they said a single word.
Lexie, right up front, felt herself tense up under that overwhelming presence. Even her breathing became careful and shallow, afraid to draw any attention.
Next up was a quick pep talk from the instructors.
Their words were short but landed heavy, every line carrying real weight and hitting the cadets right in the
gut.
You could hear the authority in every sentence, and it was clear they weren’t messing around–the expectations for the future were sky–high.
Even though it was just a quick speech, everyone there could feel the responsibility and sense of mission hanging over them.

Lexie felt a surge of adrenaline, her heart pounding as if she’d suddenly become exactly what the instructors wanted–a fearless warrior, suiting up in a mecha and diving straight into the heat of battle.
Just as Lexie was busy fantasizing about herself charging into battle like a true warrior, the real freshman boot camp started before she even had time to snap out of it.
Lexie stared in shock at the massive tire in front of her–it was easily twice her height and a full meter wide. She shot a look at Serenus, who was standing not far away.
‘Wait, didn’t Serenus promise me he’d go easy on me during boot camp?
‘Carrying this monster for 31 miles? No way. I can barely walk that far empty–handed, let alone lugging something this huge.
‘Even if I gave it everything I’ve got, there’s no way I could move this thing–forget about hauling it anywhere, Lexie thought, feeling totally overwhelmed.
Just as Lexie was standing there, eyes wide at the massive tire, Serenus’s voice cut through the air from up ahead.
“Hill, why are you just standing there like a statue? Get over here!” Serenus barked.
Lexie snapped out of her daze and hurried over as soon as she heard Serenus call out.
“Serenus, are you calling me?” Lexie asked hesitantly.
“Yeah, I called you. Hop in,” Serenus said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“Hop in? Where to?”
“Training, obviously.”
“Wait, I get to ride to training?”
Lexie pointed at herself, eyes wide in shock, not quite believing Serenus was actually talking to her.
“What else did you expect? You wanna try lugging that tire yourself? If you’re really itching for it, I can cut you some slack and let you drag a smaller one for the full 31 miles,” Serenus teased.
“Yeah, no way. I’m not that crazy–I’ll stick with the car, thanks!” Lexie shot back, grinning sheepishly.
