Samuel sensed something strange about Lexic–three differenturas were twisted together inside her.
On the surface, they seemed peaceful, but underneath, currents lashed and danger lurked
Out of the three auras, only one felt calm and stable.
The other two were locked in a vicious struggle, like beasts fighting over territory. They coiled around each other, neither one willing to back down.
The three auras were distinctly different from one another. One burned hot like fire, another cut cold like ice, and the last one felt gentle like a spring breeze. They wove together and created a strange, unsettling balance.
Samuel’s expression grew serious as he felt those three conflicting auras radiating from Lexie. She was far more complicated than he’d expected.
“What the hell is going on with her?‘ he thought, his guard going up. He couldn’t understand why someone would have such chaotic energy battling inside them.
While Samuel studied Lexie with that intense, searching look, William stepped forward and blocked his view.
He said, “We’ve got freshman boot camp in a few minutes. Don’t you two have anything better to do than stare at Hill?”
William’s sharp question snapped Samuel and Eric out of their trance. They both jerked their heads away, looking caught off guard.
They turned around awkwardly, and to cover their embarrassment, they both started fumbling for excuses.
“Uh, I forgot my school badge. I need to go grab it real quick,” Samuel mumbled.
“My shoes are dirty. I should go clean them,” Eric added hastily.
After their rushed explanations, Samuel and Eric practically bolted back toward their dorm rooms.
They’d only made it halfway down the hall when they turned around at the same time and crashed right into each other.
Samuel and Eric collided hard, but neither of them started arguing this time. They just stepped aside without a word and headed to their separate
dorms.
William watched them rush off, looking flustered, and then he turned back to Lexie, standing in front of him.
He knew her real identity–that she was actually a female. And he knew the face she was wearing right now wasn’t her real one. He asked, “Lex, did you secretly meet up with someone last night?”
“What? Meet up? No! I went straight back to my dorm and crashed. I slept until this morning, and I didn’t see anyone. I didn’t even go on Interstellar Net!”
“Really?” William’s brow furrowed, and Lexie tugged on his sleeve. She asked, “What’s wrong? Is something off about me?”
“Well, how do I put this? Lex, I’m picking up two different scents on you. They’re from two different beastmen, and the smell is weird. It’s like they were marking territory or something. And there’s another scent–it smells like heat. You know?”
William trailed off awkwardly, and Lexie’s face flushed red when she heard the word “heat.”
Last night, she’d had steamy dreams all night long. In those dreams, she’d been tangled up with Kaelen, and things had gotten intense.

When she woke up this morning, she could still remember every detail. Just thinking about it made her checks burn.
thought, mortified. ‘Can William actually smell that I was turned on?‘
“Oh god, did I really give off some kind of scent?‘
The thought terrified her, and Lexie quickly cut him off before he could say anything else.
She said, “Um, you know that nine–tailed fox I keep in my room Violet loves jumping on my bed. She probably slept there last night and left her scent on me. Williami, you must’ve smelled her. That’s all it was.”
“Really? Is that it? Did I smell wrong?” William seemed to second guess himself after hearing her explanation.
One of the scents did match Violet’s perfectly.
He said, “Lex, even if you wash that nine–tailed fox every day, she’s still a wild animal. She’s got bacteria on her, and for your health, don’t let her jump on your bed anymore, okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, I got it. Oh, William, aren’t
right?”
William checked the time, and his brow furrowed. “Lex, it’s getting late. We’re going to be late. Here’s what we’ll do–go change into your uniform right now, and we’ll head straight to the field. If we’re late on the first day, the instructor’s definitely going to punish us.”
“Oh! Okay, I’ll go right now.”
“We’re going to be late,’ she thought, panic rising in her chest. When Lexie got anxious, she got flustered, and when she got flustered, everything fell apart.
Lexie spun around and tried to bolt for her dorm room, but she wasn’t watching where she was going. Her forehead slammed straight into the doorframe with a loud thunk.
“Lex, are you okay?” William rushed forward, his voice tight with concern as he reached for her.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me–just go change. I’ll be out in a second.” Lexie waved him off and ducked into her room, her face burning with embarrassment. She grabbed her uniform and changed as fast as humanly possible.
When Lexie burst back out, William was already dressed and waiting. ‘Of course he’s faster than me,‘ she thought.
Lexie asked, “Liam, how much time do we have? Can we still make it?”
“Fifteen minutes. Not too bad.” William glanced at her and made a quick decision. “When we get downstairs, I’ll shift and you can ride on my back. It’ll be faster.”
Lexie’s eyes widened. “Wait, can you even do that? The school has rules about shifting on campus unless there’s an emergency.”
“Then I’ll just carry you on my back and run. You’re way too slow and there’s no way you’ll make it in fifteen minutes.”
“Okay, that works.”
William took off down the stairs, and before Lexie could process what was happening, he’d already hoisted her onto his back.
He ran fast. Lexie clung to his shoulders and felt like a kite caught in a windstorm, about to get blown straight up into the sky.
The wind hit her face so hard she could barely breathe.
“Please slow down, she thought desperately. ‘I don’t care if I’m late. I don’t care if I get punished. Just slow down!
But the wind was so strong she couldn’t even get the words out
