Tumblebeast shivered a little, giving a tilt as if it had a neck that wasn’t really there. It seemed genuinely surprised that Ares could understand it like that.
Since it couldn’t speak, the beast just kept its guard up, carrying Lexie and Cristia on its back–almost as if to show Ares that it would protect them no matter what.
“I get what you’re saying,” Ares said. “Tumblebeast, the master you’re protecting is also my master. I won’t do anything to hurt them.
“You stay here and keep watch over them. I’ll head out for a bit and help improve things for our master.
“Heavy rain’s coming soon, could last a whole week. Plus, there’s particle dust around here, which will mess with the signal.
“Before the rain starts, I’ll reinforce the cave and pick up some supplies while I’m out
“Tumblebeast, do you understand what I mean?”
The beast shivered a little, its body shifting slightly in response.
Seeing that, Ares figured that meant yes. It glanced around, then walked over to a massive boulder. Using the wind blades on its mecha, it sliced through the rock like it was cutting tofu.
After cutting the boulders into neat slabs, it stacked them up in front of the cave–so perfectly, not a single gap between them, like building an impenetrable door.
Once it was done, Ares ran a scan with its mecha to make sure the cave was solid. Satisfied that nothing could go wrong, it finally turned to leave.
Before heading out, it glanced back at the beast, and for a moment, a hint of humanity flashed in its robotic
gaze.
It knew that with the beast on watch, Lexie and Cristia would be perfectly safe.
Before the rain came, it was set on gathering every useful thing it could find–so its new master could at least have it a bit easier.
It only realized its new master was a little female when it synced genes with her just now.
Whatever the new master was carrying, it had no clue. Even its scan couldn’t tell she was a female.
Ares was back in a flash, hauling a massive load of wood and a bunch of edible fruits. It had stored everything in the mecha’s storage compartment for easy transport.
As soon as it returned to the cave, the once clear sky was swallowed up by heavy, dark clouds–just like it had expected.
Moments later, fat raindrops began pounding the ground. Ares hurried to stash the fruits and wood deeper

While it busied itself, Ares kept glancing over at Tumblebeast. The creature lay quietly on the ground, its big eyes filled with curiosity and a bit of confusion, clearly trying to make sense of why Ares was running around so much.
‘It’s clever, sure, but it’s still not human–talking to it isn’t exactly easy. Ares mused to itself.
But for the sake of its new master’s safety, it had to do its best to get the beast to understand what it meant, so it could be the new master’s strongest shield.
Even if this place looked safe on the surface, Ares could scan for threats hiding in the darkness.
With both its masters unable to fight, it had to make sure they stayed safe, no matter what.
Tumblebeast, you have to keep our master safe. Even if it means risking your life, you must protect them, got it?” Ares said.
The beast didn’t understand a word Ares was saying. It just went pancake–mode, lying flat on the ground, still carrying Lexie and Cristia on its back.
Seeing this, Ares knew there was no way it could get through to the beast right now.
As the rain poured down, the temperature dropped quickly. Ares had to make sure the cave stayed warm enough so its new master could ride out the storm safely.
Right now, blocking off any openings and building a fireplace were the first things it needed to do. If only its master was awake, it could use a crystal core to set up an energy–powered heating system.
But since both masters were still out cold, it had no choice but to rely on the oldest method–fire.
Ares whipped up a fireplace in record time. As soon as it got the fire going, the temperature outside dropped a solid twenty degrees.
Spotting Lexie and Cristia sprawled on the beast, Ares cocked its head, then just shrugged and plopped Cristia –still in beast form–right on top of Lexie, letting his fur keep her nice and warm.
‘No big deal, it thought. ‘My old master’s a beastman. With his thick skin and fur, cold doesn’t bother him at
all.
‘So using him as a blanket? Honestly, that’s the best idea ever.
With the fireplace crackling away, the cave slowly started to warm up. It wasn’t until three days later that Lexie finally woke up.
When Lexie woke up, everything was pitch black. The only thing she could make out was the storm raging outside, wind and rain hammering against the world.
Once she’d taken in her surroundings, Lexie’s eyes landed on something crouched right in front of her–a robot? Was she really seeing a robot here?

“Are you a robot?” she asked.

“Master, my name’s Ares. I’m a mecha–so yeah, you could call me a robot too. Your temperature’s pretty low. You should get warm, quick.
“You also look pretty weak, and you need some food and water. Here, I’ve got hot water and food ready. Eat up and get your strength back.”
“You’re a mecha? But I’ve never seen you before,” Lexie said, her brows furrowing in confusion.
“Master, that’s not the main thing you should worry about right now. Your health comes first,” Ares said.
“And Tumblebeast hasn’t eaten in three days. If it doesn’t get some food soon, it’s going to starve,” it added, glancing at Lexie.
Hearing Ares’s words, Lexie just now realized she’d been sprawled on top of the beast, treating it like a mattress without even noticing.
“Oh my gosh, my little furball! You used to be such a chubby ball, and now you’re all skinny and flat the moment I wake up.”
She hurriedly slid off the beast, then reached into her storage space for some premium nutrient fluid. She fed the beast four tubes, waiting until it perked up, and then took a few for herself.
Once she felt a bit full, Lexie hugged the nine–tailed fox, which had grown several sizes bigger, gently opened its mouth, and fed it five tubes of nutrient fluid as well.
Just as Lexie was about to feed Cristia another tube of nutrient fluid, Ares spoke up.
“Master, his body’s already maxed out on energy. If you keep feeding him, he’ll burst from all that nutrient fluid,” it warned.
Hearing that, Lexie finally stopped trying to feed the little fox–Cristia―any more nutrient fluid.
After downing another dozen tubes of nutrient fluid herself, Lexie finally had enough strength to talk to Ares.
