The Lies Behind Her Marriage novel Chapter 116

Serena pushed her hair behind her ear, and only then did she notice one earring was missing. “Oh my God. I lost my earring.”

Because Nathaniel was carrying Alisa, Serena said, “I’ll go get it.”

“We can come with you,” Nathaniel offered.

“No, stay,” Serena said, motioning to the couch. “I won’t be long.”

Serena made her way back and managed to find the earring in the neurodiagnostic unit. She assumed she had dropped it earlier when Alisa went frantic.

On her way back, she unexpectedly spotted Stefan!

He was processing payment at the cashier. From time to time, he glanced around.

Serena immediately hid behind a column.

When Stefan finished, she followed him at a distance. He went straight to the ER and into one cubicle.

She caught only a glimpse of the person with him, but she was certain it was a woman.

A strange feeling rose in her chest. She couldn’t ignore it.

Serena slipped into a vacant cubicle beside Stefan’s. She didn’t have to wait long before things turned unsettling.

“You shouldn’t have done this. You shouldn’t have tried to kill yourself."

“So you expect me to watch you marry another woman?”

“You already know this, I will only marry Serena because Dad forced me to!”

The cubicles were divided only by curtains, making it possible for Serena to peek inside, but it was too risky. Instead, she used her phone to record a video of everything, angling the camera carefully through the small gap between the curtains.

“But why? Why do you have to do everything your father says?” the woman asked.

Serena watched through her device. Her brows furrowed as Stefan placed his hands on the woman’s shoulders.

“But you’ll sleep with her,” Melanie said, her voice breaking.

“It’s unavoidable,” Stefan replied flatly. “But don’t worry. If I ever touch her, I’ll be thinking of you the entire time.”

“You said you were already working on a collaboration with Stonewatch,” Melanie said weakly. “Isn’t that enough for your father?”

Stefan shook his head. “No. And since I’m already making the effort, I might as well take everything I can.”

“You benefit from this too, Mel,” he continued. “Think about the wealth I’ll gain by marrying Serena. Think about the inheritance Mathew will receive. We still get everything we want, together.”

“Imagine coming with us on vacations,” Stefan said, his tone turning disturbingly casual. “You’ll be there as my assistant. You can even pretend to look after the twins. And at night, I’ll slip into your room.”

A calculated smile spread across his face, one Serena had never seen before. “Serena won’t suspect a thing.”

Serena had seen enough. Her hands trembled as she stopped the recording. Without making a sound, she turned and left.

When she saw Nathaniel in the hospital lobby, he immediately noticed the change in her expression. Worry etched across his face. “Everything okay?”
