The Lies Behind Her Marriage novel Chapter 262

“Go on. I came just as you asked,” Noelle said to Brian. “What is it that you needed to speak to me about?”

Brian had been transferred to a correctional facility. Noelle and Silas had come to see him as he requested.

At the visiting area, Brian leaned back in his seat, his gaze shifting to Silas. Then he returned his attention to Noelle. “Can I speak to you alone?”

“Whatever you have to say, you can say it in front of me,” Silas said, his tone sharp.

Noelle watched as Brian hesitated. He repeatedly opened his mouth, only to shut it whenever his eyes landed on Silas. She sighed. “Silas, maybe you should give us some time. This is going to take forever if he’s afraid of you.”

When Silas frowned, Noelle added, “He can’t do anything to me.”

Correctional officers stood watch at each corner of the visitation room, while Brian remained behind a thick glass divider, separated from them.

Silas narrowed his eyes at Brian. He said, “Fine.”

He stood up and waited outside the visitation room.

Now that they were alone, Brian gulped and said, “Noelle, I’m so sorry about everything. I want you to know that I never approved of Gwen’s decision to drug you.”

He became teary-eyed. “That’s why, after I learned what happened, I took responsibility.”

“No, you didn’t,” Noelle cut in. “You were afraid Gwen’s schemes would come to light, and that she’d end up in jail. Ricardo Silva threatened her. He said he’d expose everything if he were ever caught.”

Brian slammed his hand against the table. His lips trembled as he answered, “No, that’s not it. Well, yes. There is truth to that too, but I was also angry with Gwen. We even fought that day and the days that followed. I knew what she did was wrong. That’s why I took responsibility and offered to marry you.”

“But you were still wrong,” Noelle said, her jaw tightening. “You know in your heart what you should have done.”

“You should have reported Gwen! If that had happened, Silas would have owned up to sleeping with me, and my son would not have been separated from us,” Noelle snapped. “Instead, you let me raise Benson!”

“Why?” her voice rose. “Why were you so cruel?”

“I don’t know!” Brian broke down. He looked flustered, grabbing his hair. “I don't know why I did those things."

“What did I ever do to you, Brian? Just because I tried to fight for our relationship back then? But did I really force your hand? Did you really have no other choice but to marry me?” Noelle asked. “I’m sure no one put a gun to your head. You still had your own mind and free will.”

“We grew up together!” She pointed to herself. “I was your best friend.”

“Many times, we ate breakfast together. We studied together, and our families went on vacations together.”
