The Lies Behind Her Marriage novel Chapter 270

Dinner Invite.

Cedar International Airport.

Alice and Xavier had no scheduled meetings with distributors yet, or the procurement consulting firm assisting them with the bid process. So, naturally, they only wore casual clothes.

Alice wasn’t used to dressing up with Xavier, and it was the same for him.

With each other, they could be themselves.

“Our car service met with an accident on the way here. They are arranging another vehicle, but it's going to take half an hour,” Xavier said, checking his phone.

“Or we could just… take an Uber,” Alice suggested.

They had already stepped into the arrival hall, deciding how to get to their hotel, when someone bumped into her hard.

“Ouch!” Alice shrieked.

It was a blonde lady with excessive jewelry and designer clothes.

She walked past Alice without even apologizing.

“Hey!” Alice called out. “You bumped into me, and you don’t even apologize?”

The woman glared at Alice but quickly caught sight of Xavier. She hesitated, then said to him, “Sorry, handsome.”

Alice, “...”

“No, you need to apologize to my girlfriend,” Xavier corrected, putting an arm around Alice.

Alice, “...”

‘What did he say?’ Alice was stupefied, but she didn’t have time to dwell on it because she was more angry at the woman in front of her.

“Oh, you have such poor taste in women,” the lady barked, looking down at Alice.

“Says a woman who needs two layers of makeup and excessive jewelry to look good,” Xavier shot back.

‘Ha!’ Alice had never seen this side of Xavier.

“Apologize to my girlfriend now!” Xavier demanded.

It was only then that the lady felt threatened. She clenched her jaw before glancing at Alice. “Sorry.”

“Haley, any problem here?”

Just then, an older man approached the unknown woman.

Alice thought the man looked familiar. The man glanced at Xavier and Alice. He stilled and paled. Then, he stuttered, “X—Xavier, is that you?”

“Xavier, it’s me. Your dad. Walter,” the man said, looking emotional. “It’s been a while, but I’d still remember my own son after all these years.”

Alice turned to Xavier. Recognition dawned on him—and on Alice too.

Xavier looked like his father!

“I tried to get in touch with your mother. I heard that you and your mom were living in a small town somewhere, but she didn’t reply to me,” Walter revealed.

When Alice looked at Xavier, he seemed conflicted, but he still said, “Sure, I guess dinner is fine.”

The procurement consulting firm in charge of the bidding had arranged a car pickup for them, but because of the accident, Xavier had canceled it altogether. He accepted Walter’s offer to drop them off at their hotel.

However, on the way, Alice remembered she still needed to buy her medication. Although it had been more than four years since her accident, she was still taking medication from time to time. She told Xavier, “We need to drop by the pharmacy.”

They saw a pharmacy a block away from their hotel, so Xavier said, “You can drop us here, Walter.”

Walter’s car stopped right in front of NC Pharmacy.

“You are staying at the Best Western Hotel? Couldn’t your company afford to book you in a better hotel?” Haley remarked, glaring at the hotel across the pharmacy.

At first, Alice and Xavier were confused, but when they looked up and saw the hotel, they understood.

Before they could clarify the confusion, Walter scolded her, “Don’t say that, Haley. Best Western is fine.”

“Sorry about that, Xavier,” Walter said.

Xavier shook his head. “It’s fine, Walter. We’ll just get off here. And you don’t need to pick us up. We can find your place.”

“Okay.” Walter smiled. “Thank you, Xavier. I appreciate it.”

After getting out of the car, Alice raised a brow at Xavier. She asked, “Why didn’t you correct her?”

“What for? I don’t really care,” Xavier said. He helped with her luggage and added, “Come on, let’s buy your medication.”

“I wonder if we can bill your medication to Nathan,” he added, sending Alice into laughter.
