Three Doctors.
Serena and Nathaniel arrived at Thorne Neurological Sciences Institute at eleven in the morning. They had lunch in the office and briefly discussed their wedding until their scheduled appointment at three in the afternoon.
Gavin took care of all the arrangements. Instead of the clinic, they were in the reading room of the research institute’s treatment area.
From there, Serena’s MRI images could be better viewed.
Serena’s MRI results from Rexam were digitally available online, so she could easily d******d them.
“Please take a seat, Miss Vanders. The doctors will be here any minute,” Gavin said.
Serena smiled at him. “It’s been a while, Gavin.”
“Yes, it has,” Gavin acknowledged. “The boss kept me busy.”
Since Nathaniel was often in Rexam, Gavin looked after all three businesses in Velmon. Although Nathaniel promoted many executives to fill in his role, his assistant still had to personally see that everything was in order.
Inside the room, a radiologist had already reviewed the MRI in advance. Nathaniel had specifically requested a radiologist who specialized in neuroradiology. His name was Doctor Vance.
The doctors were always busy, but one word from Nathaniel and they all cleared their schedules. Nathaniel had asked a neurosurgeon and a tenured neurologist to review Serena’s condition.
In half an hour, they had all arrived, with Nathaniel guiding them in.
“Everyone, meet my wife, Serena,” he introduced.
“Ah, the one who got away,” the older doctor said, chuckling.
Serena smiled while Nathaniel shook his head. Everyone at the research institute knew who she was.
“Serena, this is Doctor Weiss. He is the best neurologist we have in the institute,” Nathaniel introduced. Then he motioned to another man. “And this is Doctor Kane. He is the recent addition to the team, a renowned neurosurgeon whom I have been pursuing for the last six months.”
“And Mr. Thorne has succeeded,” Doctor Kane said.
“Thank you, doctors,” Serena said, shaking their hands.
“Gentlemen,” the radiologist stepped closer. “Shall we take a look at the images together?”
It was what Nathaniel wanted. With three great minds together, surely they could arrive at more thorough findings.
Later, they all sat down to discuss Serena’s MRI.
“Contrary to the MRI report, the meningioma appears to be at an early stage,” Dr. Vance said. “The surrounding inflammation may have been mistaken for tumor progression. And even then, the inflammation is still mild.”
“And I agree with Doctor Vance’s findings,” Doctor Weiss said. “It isn’t an urgent case.”
“I will only recommend surgery if it’s necessary, especially since you’re pregnant,” Doctor Kane said. “Even diagnostic procedures should be limited to avoid unnecessary risk.”
The three doctors looked at each other. It was Doctor Vance who clarified, “Meaning, we won’t require another MRI unless you develop new symptoms or your current symptoms worsen.”
“We can consider contrast later in the pregnancy if needed,” Doctor Kane added. “But only if it will significantly change how we manage your condition.”
“It can take a serious psychological toll,” Doctor Weiss added. "That's why patients like Serena, or those with terminal illness, should be treated with a positive outlook. Nothing should change in your routine, Nathan."
"I agree," Doctor Kane said.
“It’s Doctor Hermione Jones,” Nathaniel shared. "She was the one who pressured Serena into getting surgery."
Doctor Weiss immediately responded, “I know her. She has applied to join our institute several times, Nathan. I reviewed her applications myself… and declined them.”
“She applied to join us?” Nathaniel echoed.
“Yes. Nathan, you first met her in Germany, at one of the conferences we both attended. That was over a year ago,” Doctor Weiss said, leaning forward slightly. “Do you remember assisting a female doctor on the second day? You spoke to the organizers and insisted she be allowed in, since she was properly registered.”
Nathaniel frowned. It took a moment, but then he nodded. “Yes, I remember.”
“That was her,” Doctor Weiss said. “From what I understood, she had a dispute with another participant. That doctor used her connections to block Dr. Jones from attending the second day. You intervened and ensured she was admitted.”
“Since then, she has applied repeatedly to join the research institute,” Doctor Weiss continued. “As part of the review process, I looked into her professional background. There were… concerns.”
He paused before adding, “Several colleagues reported conflicts in her previous workplaces. She has a reputation for being difficult to work with and for pushing her way through situations, even when it crosses professional boundaries.”
Then it clicked.
Nathaniel remembered the look in Doctor Hermione’s eyes when they met in Rexam. Something was off about her reaction, and he meant to find out why.
After the meeting with the doctors, Nathaniel took out his phone. He contacted his military connections and said, “Look into Doctor Hermione Jones and her recent activities in Rexam.”
