At Last.
Noelle’s mouth fell open.
Suddenly, the attention on them was on a whole new level.
It wasn’t just the gasps from the crowd, nor the fact that Silas was down on one knee, holding a blue velvet box with an expensive diamond ring in it.
It was the spotlight.
The music.
Aside from the band playing on the left side of the stage, two instrumentalists walked up from behind her, playing the saxophone.
A soft soul melody floated through the ballroom, warm and romantic, carrying the timeless charm of 'Can I Call You Rose?'
~ “Can I call you Rose?
Cause you're sweet like a flower in bloom
Can I call you Rose?
Cause your fragrance takes over the room, darling.” ~
Silas was the last person anyone expected to be sentimental, yet he chose such a soulful song.
The melody deepened until it became the only thing Noelle could hear.
The chatter faded.
The diamond caught the spotlight, scattering tiny flashes of light between them, almost as if it were calling to her.
For a moment, the ballroom no longer existed.
All Noelle could see was Silas.
And the look in his eyes, it was steady, certain, unwavering.
Just when Noelle thought it could not get any more romantic, pictures from her high school days flashed on the LED screen to the right.
Everyone turned and held their breath.
Noelle covered her mouth in shock.
They were stolen photos of her during her high school years.
One was a photo of her young self sleeping on her desk during lunch break. Her first thought was… ‘How dare he?’
But the next ones touched her heart so deeply.
There were two pictures of her laughing with her friends around her.
Another one captured her reading a book in the library.
There were a few from academic competitions.
Silas even managed to document how she fed a stray cat during her third year in high school.
The last photo undid her.
Noelle wept.
It was an image of her standing by the school grounds, looking at the sun as it was setting. Despite being an image of her back, Silas clearly captured the side of her face and how she was smiling.
For a brief moment, Noelle felt the ache of how long he had loved her in silence, choosing distance over confession because of Brian.
She wiped the tears from her eyes just as the song faded.
At that moment, Silas said, “Noelle, I love you and Theo. Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me… because of me and because you choose me?”
Noelle cried more. Her voice broke in and out as she said, “Of course, I choose you. I love you too, Silas. I will marry you.”
A sound of relief swept through the ballroom.
Noelle saw that Celine was in tears. Sterling was smiling, looking at them. When she turned to look for Serena, she was at the center table, also weeping for joy.
Just as the band concluded the song, Silas put the ring on her finger.
Then the two of them embraced.
“Let’s give it up for the next Vander couple to marry, Silas and Noelle!” the host said into the microphone.
“Congratulations!”
“You deserve to be happy!”
Many offered words of praise. Others simply clapped their hands or took pictures.
“Mom, Dad!” Theo ran to them and hugged them both. He was also crying.
He didn’t say more, but Noelle and Silas could see it in his eyes and the way he held them.
Theo was probably the happiest one in the room.
Noelle, Silas, and Theo embraced at the center stage for some time until Nathaniel and Serena walked up to them.
“Congratulations, you two. I look forward to your wedding,” Serena said.
“Now that you have proposed, Brothers, it’s time to step back. This is our event, after all,” Nathaniel said, smirking.
