Chapter 61: Four Years Later II
“Everyone,” Silas directed the crowd to the front, “today is also a special day. It’s my niece and nephew’s birthday. So our family decided to celebrate their birthday with the company.”
VanderMed Technologies was mostly owned by the Vanders. Sixty-five percent of the shares belonged to family members, including a five percent share under Melvin Vander’s name. At present, ten percent was in Serena’s name. The rest were held by Sterling, Silas, and Celine. Thus, everyone in the company knew each member of the Vander family, especially the recently found Serena Vander and her children.
The double doors to the ballroom opened, and hotel staff brought out two cakes for the twins. Serena quickly turned to get Alisa Among the two, Alisa was the quiet one. She was smart, just like her brother, but her way of thinking, communicating, and processing was different. 2
Like Serena, Alisa carried the Ellison gene. She had Serena’s eyes, an angelic face, and skin as white as pearl. When Serena held her daughter, Alisa instinctively leaned toward her chest. She did not say a word; she simply observed everyone and everything around her.
Silas took over the program, encouraging the crowd. “Let’s sing happy birthday to Sebastian and Alisa Vander.”
The venue was filled with joyous singing of Happy Birthday.
Sebastian was still in Silas’ arms. He looked smug and assured. After the birthday song ended, he was the first to lean in and blow out the candle. Alisa hesitantly blew
out hers.
“Happy birthday, Sebastian and Alisa!” the crowd said in unison.
“It’s time to eat the cake!” Sebastian announced, earning another round of giggles.
“Happy birthday, Bastin, Ali,” Serena said, referring to her children’s nicknames. Mommy loves you.”
“And Grandpa too,” Sterling said, his eyes sparkling with glee.
“And Grandma too!” Celine added.

The children were presented with gifts, and soon, dinner began. As the crowd settled into their seats, Serena and her family walked around to entertain their guests.
Serena first approached Xavier’s table.

During the last four years, her best male friend had always been there for her.
Xavier supported her career. Many times, he helped watch over the kids. He was there at every family celebration, and through the challenges of raising twins, especially when it came to Alisa.
“Why didn’t you stay at our table?” Serena asked.
Xavier chuckled. Behind his glasses, his gray eyes gleamed with amusement. “Your Uncle Melvin and his family are at your table, plus the kids’ nanny. I’m fine here with the Montgomerys.”
Yes, the Montgomerys.
Serena turned to her father’s long-time friend and business partner, Charles Montgomery. He was already smiling at her
“Don’t worry, Serena. We’re taking care of Xavier,” Charles Montgomery said.
His wife, Stella, was also beaming at Serena. “Serena, the children are growing more and more beautiful. Sebastian is showing exceptional social skills. How is Alisa doing?”
Like Xavier, the Montgomerys were witnesses to the Vanders’ growth over the last four years, including the twins. They were also shareholders, with Charles holding five percent in his name. They were among the few who knew about Alisa’s condition. 1
“Alisa is slowly improving,” Serena smiled, focusing on the bright side. “She’ll get there, I know she will. At least we had early intervention.”
“That’s right.” Stella nodded. Sensing Serena’s careful response, she changed the topic. “Bastin, on the other hand, is just wow. He is talkative, opinionated, and already correcting adults when they get things wrong.”
“And his best trait is his looks,” another shareholder, Miriam Rhodes, said, pouting. “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Your son, Serena, is very handsome. Alisa is also beautiful, but Sebastian has this unique eye color. Blue-gray, is it? It’s rare.”
Hearing that, Serena almost choked on her own spit, but thankfully, Xavier tried to save her from the awkward moment.
“Who else does Bastin look like?” Xavier said. “Me, of course, the uncle!”
“Oh, Xavier, we both know Sebastian doesnt look like you,” Miriam frowned. There’s just something charismatic about Bastin!”

It was only after Stella cleared her throat that Miriam realized what she had said wrong. She looked down and said, “I’m sorry, Serena. I completely forgot.”
Serena faked a smile. She glanced at her son, who was having a blast talking to Silas at the other table.
Finally, she said, “It’s okay. Bastin’s father did have very striking features. I suppose my divorce wasn’t all that bad. My son got his father’s looks.”
