Chapter 95: The Buried Evidence
The Buried Evidence.
“Can I have these?” Nathaniel asked, scooping up the pieces of evidence spread across the table.
Serena hesitated before she said, “Fine. I have other copies of these. What you have are only certified true copies.”
While Nathaniel gathered the papers, Serena asked, “What about you? What have you found out?”
Nathaniel looked at her and outright said, “We found out that Roselind’s inherited mansion is now under Vanessa’s name, and that Victor’s lawyers did not comply with the subpoena we served them.”
Serena stilled when she heard that. Now, she was certain Vanessa could be… Victor’s daughter.
“Come to think of it,” Nathaniel said, “I do remember Mrs. Holt mentioning she couldn’t conceive, and that Vanessa was a miracle.”
Serena finally realized Nathaniel was catching up.
He sucked in a deep breath after placing everything into the plastic envelope where Serena had collected the evidence. “The Holts will go down with Victor. We just need more proof.”
He paused, then added, “I should have more leads by tomorrow afternoon. Before that, you’re attending the company’s celebration party, remember?”
Serena blinked and nodded. She looked down, massaging the back of her neck. “Yes, we are going.”
Nathaniel smiled. “I told Dennis and the others that you’re back, but I haven’t told them you’re a Vander, or about the kids.
They’re going to be blown away.”
‘His friends,’ Serena noted. Dennis and Peter were fine, but truthfully, she wasn’t looking forward to meeting Timothy again. Still, since they had already agreed, she said, “We’ll go, but we might not stay long.”
Serena checked the time and, seeing how late it was, urged, “You should go.”
“I wasn’t planning to keep you up,” Nathaniel said. “Thank you for the coffee.”
He glanced around the suite and added, “Mind walking me to the door?”
Serena,
“(
She pointed toward the main door. “It’s that way.”
A hiss escaped his lips. He ran his fingers through his hair, somehow making himself look even better. “Can you walk me to the door?”
Serena,
“( “}
Nathaniel wasn’t leaving yet, so Serena stood and walked him to the door. She only meant to see him out.
Before she could open it, he pulled her into an embrace.
It caught her off guard. She didn’t have time to react, to step back, or push him away. His arms held her tightly, as if he were afraid she might disappear again.
“Nathan,” she said, trying to stop him.
“Please,” he said quietly. “Just let me hold you. Just for a few seconds.”
She went still.
She could feel the warmth of his body and the slight shaking in him. His breathing was uneven, and his voice sounded strained when he spoke.

“I missed you,” Nathaniel said. “So much that it hurt.”
Serena swallowed, her chest tightening.
“I don’t care how many times I say this,” he continued. “I’ll spend the rest of my life showing you how much I regret what I did back then.”
Serena’s heart sprinted.
For a moment, she didn’t move.
And that… scared her.
When her senses finally returned, she said, “Nathan… let go.”
Nathaniel pulled away at last. He caught her hand and held it gently, a faint smile on his lips. “Good night.”

Meanwhile, in a luxurious residential home, the Holt household was in turmoil.
“This is your fault, Vanessa,” Mathew Holt snapped. “Nathan caught you lying to his face. You should have been more careful.”
He slammed his hand on the armrest. “He’s not returning our calls, not even his assistant’s. Any chance we had of acquiring Kline BioSolutions is gone.”
“It’s because of Serena!” Vanessa cried, sinking into her seat. “How could Nathan still choose her over me?”
Vivian Holt frowned. “Didn’t Victor say she was just an orphan he adopted without proper papers?”
Vanessa nodded. “That’s what he told me. More than once.”
Her voice dropped. “The worst part is… Serena knows she isn’t Victor’s real daughter. I don’t know how she found out, but she
knows.”
Vivian was silent for a moment before sitting beside her daughter. That doesn’t matter.”
Both Vanessa and Mathew turned to her.
“In the eyes of the public,” Vivian continued calmly, “Serena is still Victor’s daughter.”
Mathew narrowed his eyes. “What are you suggesting?”
“I raised you, Vanessa,” Vivian said evenly. “You know how to put someone in their place. I know Nathaniel hurt you, but you need to be confident in yourself.”
“Kline BioSolutions is holding a celebration tomorrow. Nathan canceled our invitations… but Timothy can take you as his plus one,” Vivian suggested. “Didn’t you have a special agreement with Timothy before? I’m sure he can still help you.”
“You don’t need to confront Serena,” Vivian added. “Show Nathan and everyone else, what he gains by choosing you. Your background. Your connections. The stability you offer as the future Mrs. Thorne.”
