Chapter 97: The Jade of Promise

The Jade of Promise.

“Here you go, Miss Vander. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience.”

The lawyer in charge of the deed of sale for her property explained that he had made a mistake in the documents. As a result, Serena needed to sign them again. Together with Milo, her bodyguard, she went to the law office to settle the matter.

Serena was already in her evening dress. She looked glamorous in sleeveless, floor-length ivory gown. It was her attire for the

dinner celebration Nathaniel had invited her to.

After seeing that the documents had been signed, she left with Milo. They were on the road in just a few minutes.

“Miss, aren’t you supposed to go to the Velmon Grand Regency?” Milo asked as he drove the rented vehicle. He pointed to the left. “There it is.”

Serena checked her watch and realized it was almost time for the celebration party. So, she called her brother. They were supposed to meet at the Velmon Grand Regency.

Silas picked up and said, “We were about to go, but Bastin spilled milk on his clothes, and Mom’s. So they’re both changing.”

“Oh, no,” Serena said. “Not Mother.”

“I know,” Silas hissed.

Celine always took forever to change.

Serena thought about it and decided it was too inconvenient to drive back to the Astoria Hotel. Besides, Silas said, “You go ahead. Don’t get too comfortable with Nathaniel.”

So, she told Milo, “Drop me off at the lobby.”

“Yes, Serena,” Milo said.

She texted Nathaniel that she had already arrived, but he hadn’t replied yet.

Serena went to the ladies’ room and checked herself in the mirror, reapplying her lipstick. As she did, her gaze drifted to the charm bracelet Nathaniel had given her. It dangled beside her jade bangle.

She couldn’t help but smile at how Ali and Bastin’s names were engraved on it.

Finally, she received a text from Nathaniel: [I’m on the way. I had to pick Mom up from her house.]

Serena made her way to the assigned ballroom. She intended to wait outside for Nathaniel or her family before going in, but to her dismay, someone spotted her.

“Serena, you are here.”

The voice came from Vanessa Holt.

Vanessa stood by the ballroom doors, beaming, eyes flashing with mischief as she held her golden purse with style.

Admittedly, Serena was surprised to see her.

‘I thought Nathaniel wasn’t going to invite her,’ she mused, her eyes locked on Vanessa.

Irritation flared. Serena didn’t want any drama. She turned to leave, but instead, she bumped into an older gentleman.

When Serena looked up, her eyes widened. The man before her was the Vice President of the country, Mr. Graham Whitlock!

“Watch where you’re going, young lady,” Whitlock said, holdings wife.

“Oh, my goodness. Mr. Whitlock.” Serena bowed her head respectfully. “It’s an honor to meet you.”

As she straightened, Serena remembered how Nathaniel had established a treatment facility for neurological diseases, and how Graham Whitlock had publicly disclosed that he was receiving treatment for severe migraines.

‘Could the Vice President be Nathaniel’s client?’ Serena wondered

Before she could ask, Vanessa stepped in.

“Vice President Whitlock,” Vanessa said, greeting the older couple “I apologize on Serena’s behalf. She is Victor Kline’s daughter. Let’s just say she wasn’t raised to handle herself well in public.”

Serena froze. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing!

“Ah, I know you,” Mr. Whitlock said. “You’re Kline BioSolutions’ rand ambassador-Vanessa Holt. Councilor Holt’s daughter.”

“Yes, that’s right!” Vanessa smiled proudly, resting her hand on her diamond necklace. “But Nathan made some changes. He’s hiring a new ambassador. I could use some rest.”

Serena,

The Vice President’s attention shifted back to Serena. “So this is Victor Kline’s daughter?”

“Miss, are you joining the party?” Mr. Whitlock asked, confusion evident in his expression. “Didn’t Nathaniel put Victor behind bars?”

“Victor Kline?” the Vice President’s wife added. “The one who had Nathaniel’s father killed?”

“That’s him,” Vanessa said, sighing with visible disgust. She motioned to Serena, “and she’s his daughter.”

“The Klines were not my real parents,” Serena said firmly. “I was ”

“I’m sure Serena isn’t proud of that,” Vanessa cut in smoothly. “But what can we do? You can’t choose who your parents are.”

It amazed Serena how calmly Vanessa said that, especially when she herself might be Victor’s real daughter.

“As I said, Victor is not my real father. I was-

Again, Serena tried to explain, but Vanessa interrupted. “Mr. Vice President, may I escort you to your table?”

More people arrived, faces unfamiliar to Serena. Another older couple approached, both looking to be in their sixties, wealthy

and self-assured.

“Oh, Vanessa, it’s you!” the woman with black hair exclaimed, pecking Vanessa on the cheek. “When word got out that you were no longer the model for the company, I thought it was strange. I was sure it was just a rumor.”

As the woman pulled away, her eyes landed on Serena, more precisely, on her bangle.

“Oh my,” she murmured. “That bangle looks familiar.”

She leaned back, then stepped closer to Serena. “It looks like the Jade of Promise from the Ellison family. Dear child, are you part of the Ellison family?”
