“Eat some fruit... ”
Nova Donald let out a dry laugh, then buried her head back into the water, blowing a stream of bubbles.
Alaric Langdon did not say anything, but the tips of his ears turned pink.
Over the next seven days, Nova and Alaric walked home from school together, though no one really noticed. The entire student body had their attention fixed on Caleb Langdon and Sylvie Sutton.
After his parents were called in that day, Caleb had a massive falling out with his family over Sylvie, even threatening to give up his inheritance. The stunt nearly sent Mrs. Langdon to the hospital.
The school administration could do nothing about Caleb and Sylvie. The two of them were practically joined at the hip around campus, acting every bit the deeply-in-love couple.
Inside the natatorium, Nova swam half a mile in one go while Alaric stood by the edge of the pool, clocking her with a timer.
When she finally finished, a faint smile touched Alaric's lips. “Not bad. You're improving.”
“Why is it Nova again?”
A voice suddenly echoed from the other side of the pool. Tina Jacobs and several other girls from their class walked over, already dressed in their swimsuits.
“Nova, it doesn't matter how hard you practice. The person Caleb likes is Sylvie, and they're already together! Even the teachers have turned a blind eye to it. Complaining won't do you any good.”
Tina had always loved speaking up for Sylvie.
By then, Sylvie stepped out from the group. She was wearing a pastel-pink, designer halter-top swimsuit that immediately drew everyone's gaze. It stood in stark contrast to the conservative blue suits the school provided.
“Tina, the past is in the past. Let's not bring it up again.”
Sylvie feigned generosity, acting as though she were forgiving Nova.
One of the surrounding students gasped. “Sylvie, your swimsuit is so pretty! Did Caleb buy it for you?”
