Hearing the sheer contempt in his voice, Nova actually smiled.
She had never truly realized that in Caleb's mind, she was nothing more than a despicable, selfish, and dark-hearted villain.
They had, after all, grown up together. Back in kindergarten and elementary school, they used to play and joke around constantly. Sure, they went to different middle schools and drifted apart, but it had never warranted this level of vicious hostility.
Nova snapped her book shut, looking completely unbothered. “If you actually have a brain, go investigate it yourself. If you find real evidence proving I did it, feel free to report me. But if you have nothing, then stop playing the white knight in front of me. It just makes you look like an absolute idiot.”
“You!”
Caleb was completely triggered by her words. He slammed his hand on the table and stood up, rearing back to strike her.
The very next second, a hand clamped down on his arm. Alaric's voice was ice-cold. “This is a library, not a place for you to throw a tantrum.”
Nova froze. When she looked up, she caught the chilling glint in Alaric's eyes.
“Who the hell do you think you are? Back off!”
Caleb tried to shove Alaric away, but Alaric's grip was like an iron vise. Caleb yanked his arm multiple times but couldn't break free.
Alaric stated flatly, “A Student Librarian's job is to maintain order in the library. Do you need me to press the security alarm?”
Only then did Nova notice the red armband pinned to Alaric's sleeve. It clearly read, 'Student Librarian'.
She remembered the school paid their librarians; only students on financial aid took up the job.
Alaric had originally been thrown into the F-Track Class because of getting into fights. If he was caught fighting again, the school would undoubtedly expel him!
Worse, Mrs. Langdon would easily use it as an excuse to force him to drop out entirely.
Just as she hoped, hearing her voice brought Alaric back to his senses. He stared coldly at Caleb groaning on the floor and warned, “Watch your mouth. If there's a next time, I'll rip it off.”
A crowd of onlookers had already gathered to watch the drama. Caleb never expected the quiet kid to actually throw a punch. Boiling with rage, Caleb scrambled up, ready to strike back. But Nova stepped firmly in front of Alaric and said, “Caleb, you started the verbal abuse, so you deserved that hit! If you strike back, you're the one at fault. Do you really want another demerit on your record?”
“So what if I get a demerit? You think I give a damn about that?”
Seeing him still trying to attack, Nova immediately countered, “Don't forget! If you get one more demerit, the school will expel you! Once you're gone, what's going to happen to Sylvie?”
