Episode 29-2
“You wouldn’t.”
“Try me.”
We stared at each other. Around us, the fighting had stopped. Everyone was watching.
Finally, Coleman nodded. “We’ll retreat.”
“Smart choice.” I released him, stepping back. “Now I ran back to Harrison. Tell him what you saw here. Tell him that reform has teeth.”
He shifted and ran, his remaining fighters following.
The battle was over.
The aftermath was brutal.
Clearwater Pack had lost eighteen wolves, including their Alpha. Dozens more were injured. Homes destroyed, families shattered.
Diana stood in the ruins of her Pack House, covered in blood and ash, and looked at me with hollow eyes.
“My father’s dead. Half the Council is dead. We have no alpha, no leadership, and winter is coming.” Her
voice was flat. “What do w
do now?”
Marcus was beside her instantly, pulling her into his arms. “You survive. You rebuild. And you’re not alone.”
I surveyed the damage, my heart heavy. This was the cost of reform. This is what happens when you
challenge the old ways.
And it was only the beginning.
“We’ll send resources,” I said. “Food, medical supplies, builders. You’ll have everything you need to
recover.”
“That’s not enough.” An older wolf stepped forward, one of Clearwater’s surviving Council members. “We need an Alpha. Someone strong enough to protect us if Harrison attacks again.”
Eyes turned to Diana. She shook her head.
“I’m not Alpha material. I’m just a warrior.”
“You held the pack together tonight when everyone else fell,” the council member insisted. “You’re your
parent’s child. It’s your birthright.”
“Birthright means nothing if I’m not strong enough.” Diana looked at me. “Alpha Sera, what do I do?”
All eyes turned to me. The Alpha who’d revolutionized pack structure. Who’d challenged the Council and
won? Who everyone looked to for answers.

“You have two choices,” I said carefully. “Challenge yourself for the Alpha position and lead Clearwater yourself. Or merge with another pack, let them absorb you and protect you.”
“Neither option is good,” Marcus said.
“No. But they’re the options available.” I looked at Diana. “If you lead, you’ll have my full support. Training, resources, political backing. But you’ll also have a target on your back. Harrison will see you as a priority threat.”
“And if we merge?”
“Then Clearwater’s identity disappears. You become part of someone else’s pack, following someone else’s rules.” I paused. “But you’d be safer.”
Diana was quiet for a long moment. Then she straightened, wiping blood from her face.
“My father died defending what he believed in. He believed
was worth fighting for.” She looked at
her pack, at the survivors. “I won’t let his death mean anything. I’ll challenge for Alpha.”
“Diana…” Marcus started.
“I can do this. With your help. With Alpha Sera’s help.” She met my eyes. “Will you stand with me?”
“Always.” I meant it. “We stand together. All reformed packs, all allies. That’s how we survive.”
We stayed at Clearwater for three days, helping with immediate needs. Temporary shelters, medical care,
security patrols.
Diana’s challenge was accepted by the pack. She won, barely, against two other candidates. On the third
day, I witnessed her Alpha ceremony, watching her take on the mantle of leadership.
She looked terrified and determined in equal measure.
After the ceremony, she pulled me aside.
“How do you do it? Lead while pregnant, while fighting a war, while carrying the weight of everyone’s
expectations?”
r
“Honestly? I have no idea.” I touched my belly, where my daughter was growing. “I just wake up every day and decide not to give up. Some days that’s all I can manage.”
“What if it’s not enough?”
“Then you ask for help. You lean on your allies.” I smiled. “You let your mate support you instead of trying to carry everything alone.”
She glanced at Marcus, who was coordinating with Lucas on defense improvements. “He proposed yesterday. In the middle of all this chaos
“What did you say?”
“Yes. Obviously.” She laughed shakily. “Is that crazy? Getting engaged while my pack is in ruins?”

“It’s human. Or wolf. Whatever.” I squeezed her hand. “Grab happiness where you can find it, Diana. In war, those moments matter most.”
On the drive back to Crescent Moon, everyone was quiet. We’d won the battle, but the cost was clear now. This wasn’t going to be a clean war of tactics and strategy.
This was going to be bloody.
“Harrison will retaliate,” Elena said. “This was a major loss for him. He’ll want revenge.”
“Let him come.” Adrian’s voice was dark. “We’ll be ready.”
“Will we?” I asked quietly. “If he attacks all five reformed packs simultaneously, can we defend them all?”
No one had an answer.
That night, back home, I stood on my balcony and watched the moon rise. In my belly, my daughter kicked, strong and insistent.
“Your mother is trying to stop a war,” I whispered to her. “Your father is hunting conspirators. And you’re going to be born into a world that’s either free or in ruins.”
“No pressure, right?” Adrian’s voice came from behind me.
“None at all.” I leaned back against him. “Did you find anything more on Torres?”
“Enough to bury him. But we need timing. Release it too soon, and Harrison adapts. Too late, and…” He
didn’t finish.
“Too late, and more people die.”
We stood together in the darkness, and I felt the weight of every decision, every choice, every life depending on me making the right call.
I’d conquered death once.
Now I had to make sure others didn’t have to.
