Chapter 261
Dominic and Elara move back to give us space while Kieran watches with poorly concealed concern. I’m acutely aware of his presence as Alexander and I step into the shallow water, its perfect stillness undisturbed despite our movement, as if it exists partially outside physical laws.
“Now what?” Alexander asks, his voice low and intimate despite our audience.
The amulet warms against my palm, guiding me. “We need to align our energies,” I explain, placing the amulet between us, held by both our hands. “Your Alpha and healing natures must synchronize perfectly with my healing abilities.”
“And how exactly do we do that?” There’s a hint of challenge in his question, a reminder that despite our kiss, despite the bond between us, we’re still largely strangers learning to navigate this connection fate thrust upon us.
The answer comes from the whispers, but it makes heat rise to my cheeks. “Through physical and energetic connection,” I say, my voice nearly a whisper. “The more points of contact between us, the stronger the synchronization.”
Understanding dawns in his eyes, followed by something darker, more intense. Without hesitation, he pulls me against him, one arm wrapping around my waist while his other hand remains clasped with mine around the amulet. The sudden closeness sends a shock through me that has nothing to do with magic and everything to do with the solid warmth of his body against mine.
“Like this?” he murmurs, his breath warm against my ear, something long and hard pressing against my stomach while I fight the urge to squirm.
I nod, unable to trust my voice as our bodies align. The remaining thread of our bond flutters wildly at the contact, simultaneously strengthening and unraveling faster.
“It’s working and failing at the same time,” Elara observes, her voice sounding distant though she stands just beyond the pool. “The energies are aligning but the unraveling is accelerating too.”
“More connection,” I manage to say, understanding flowing from the whispers. “We need more touching.”
Alexander’s eyes darken at my words. Without breaking our gaze, he lowers his head until our foreheads touch, then our noses, our breath mingling in the minuscule space between our lips.
“Is this enough?” he asks, the question laden with meaning beyond the immediate ritual.
The whispers intensify, and I know it isn’t. “No,” I breathe against his lips. “We need…”
I don’t finish the sentence because he already knows. His mouth captures mine in a kiss unlike our first -where that was relief and recognition, this holds desperation and desire in equal measure. The amulet blazes between our clasped hands as the kiss deepens, his free hand sliding up my back to cradle my head, fingers tangling in my hair.
The silver light from the pool swirls around us, responding to the ritual’s progression. Through the kiss, I feel Alexander’s dual nature–Alpha strength and healing grace perfectly balanced–reaching for my

again, Vega’s spell fighting against our efforts. Alexander makes a sound of frustration against my mouth, pulling me impossibly closer, the kiss becoming more urgent as our tongues dance together, tasting and learning each other.
The bond between us stabilizes momentarily, then begins unraveling
“It’s not enough,” Elara calls out, her voice strained with concentration as she tracks the magical energies. “The spell is countering the alignment almost as quickly as you create it.”
Kieran steps forward then, his healer’s instincts overriding his personal feelings. “You need a third point of stability,” he says, his expression sedate despite the intimate scene before him. “The ritual you’re attempting requires a triangulation of energy–two points create a line that can be broken, but three points create a plane that holds even when individual connections weaken.”
