Elena knew she was unlikely to get out of attending, but she remembered the importance of negotiating.
"You know, Jack was telling me how the wives and kids don't normally attend," she said slowly. "That seems so unfair. Why don't we make it a real big, proper family dinner and have everyone attend?"
Jack immediately frowned. "That would go against tradition," he protested.
"But Sloane and I attended last time," Elena pointed out, "and at Cameron's invitation, too. Surely, it's not that big of a deal if you always make exceptions?"
Cameron's smile got a little tense as he was subtly called out. But he didn't say a word.
Elena knew she nearly had them, so she put on a big smile and forced her voice to sound syrupy sweet. "And besides," she added, "I simply have to see how JJ is healing up! It's the least I could do."
"That can be arranged," Cameron agreed. "Though we'll need enough space for everyone, so I suppose Mom and Dad will have to host. Little bro, you do still know how to get there, right?"
Noah nodded.
Cameron got up from his seat. "So it's settled! I'll text you the details later tonight."
Without another word, the two men left.
Sloane immediately sighed the moment they were gone.
"I can't believe we have to attend another Winslow dinner," she lamented, "and so soon after the last one!"
Noah was instantly at her side. "At least it'll be at my parents' home," he stated. "That should make things better."
"I doubt it," Sloane said with a frown. She sighed again. "Those men's children are either too little to be controlled or too bratty and spoiled to behave at all—and since they're not in public, they won't even pretend to try."
"They normally end up in one of the separate wings of the estate," Noah pointed out. "I'm sure we can avoid them, love."
