The week quickly flew by as Elena continued to take shifts as the Golden Gates Hospital. Before she realized it, the date of the dreaded Winslow family dinner was upon them. Elena took some solace in the fact that neither Noah nor Sloane looked especially excited.

"Every time we agree to do something with them, they just get bolder," Sloane complained. "We have to switch up tactics, love. Just doing what they want isn't getting us anywhere!"

"I know, but I don't what else to do," Noah confessed. "I know they're capable of changing, so I don't think we should fully cut them out of our lives. I mean, I don't want to go no contact with them. So I think I should go—and if I go, I want to go with you."

Noah took Sloane's hand and delicately placed a kiss next to her wedding ring. "I want them to see that I'll never be with anyone else but you."

Elena did her best to stay silent. They needed to be heading out soon, but she didn't want to interrupt their moment. Besides, it's not like Elena wanted to go.

She fully agreed with her mother that the Winslows were getting too bold, but she also understood where Noah was coming from. As the couple continued to argue back and forth, Elena sighed and stepped in, resolved to play mediator.

Eventually, the three ended up agreeing to stay, but they also agreed they would leave, at latest, by midnight.

"And if any of us really are uncomfortable and need to leave earlier, let's use a secret code word to discretely let the rest know that we need to leave now," Elena suggested.

"I suppose that's okay," Sloane relented. "But the code word needs to be something we can easily slip into conversations without thoughtlessly using."
