Joaquin received Felix's message just as his driver pulled up to the hospital entrance. He stared at the picture, his brow locked in a tight frown. In the past, he could always spot Audrey's hand in photos because of the wedding band she never took off—the one they had hastily picked out together. Now that the ring was gone, a hollow realization hit him: he couldn't even recognize his own wife's hand.
But the background was unmistakably the Royal Bistro.
After staring at the screen for a long, heavy moment, he ordered his driver, "Take me to the Royal Bistro."
The driver quickly complied, swinging the heavy car back into traffic.
Just as they turned, his phone rang. It was Rainey's nurse.
"Mr. Judd, please come back quickly," she pleaded anxiously. "Ms. Sinclair is..."
In the past, hearing those words would have sent a spike of panic and fierce protectiveness through his veins. But right now, all he felt was an overwhelming, suffocating irritation. He rubbed his temples. "What's wrong with her now?"
"She's... her condition isn't great." The nurse seemed taken aback by his cold tone. She lowered her voice. "She's..."
Joaquin stared out the window, his voice turning lethally cold. "She told you to call me, didn't she?"
Dead silence. The nurse's guilt was palpable.
"Tell her to rest. I'm handling the internet situation." He hung up before the nurse could say another word.
