Chapter 105 Baby Talk, of Sorts…
Evelyn’s POV
“Hey, ladies! Evelyn!” Whitney beams like she’s stepping into a photoshoot. Her blonde
hair is doing that effortless, wind-blown thing-like an invisible fan is assigned to her at
all times.
“Girl, come sit!” Archer says, way too excited.
I cut Archer a sharp look that says, Really? You invited her? Archer just grins right back,
unbothered.
Whitney drops into the seat with a practiced little wink. “I’ve only got a few minutes
before training. I’m trying to squeeze in more sparring-tighten up my resume.” She
peels her banana and takes a swig of water like she’s on a health commercial.
“Hi, Whitney,” I say, neutral.
She leans in, eyes bright. “Evelyn! How are you feeling? You’re already showing that
pregnancy weight, huh?”
My smile doesn’t reach my eyes. “It’s called a healthy pregnancy.”
“Oh!” Whitney lifts her hands like she’s innocent. “I didn’t mean it like that. It looks good
on you-really.”
The recovery is quick, but it still lands wrong-like perfume sprayed over something
rotten. She adds, too sweet, “Not everyone can pull off extra weight and still look
amazing.”
“One,” I say.
Everyone at the table pauses.
Whitney blinks. “One… what?”
“That was your one opportunity to speak sideways to me,” I tell her, holding her gaze
until her posture folds in on itself.
At the edge of my awareness, my guards register the shift in my mood before I even fully

Then the dining hall lights flicker.

I move my hand slightly-an understated command to stand down. The girls see it. So
does everyone else.
“Good morning, ladies.” Ms. Rebecca appears beside me like she’s been waiting for the
exact second. She sets a smoothie down in front of me. “Here you go, sweetie. And I
hope you’re staying calm. This baby needs good energy only.”
As soon as she says it, the force bleeding off me evaporates.
I blink. That was… strange.
Whitney’s voice comes careful now, all caution and apology. “Evelyn, wow. I’m sorry. I
truly didn’t mean it.”
“Good,” Ms. Rebecca says, patting my hand with pointed gentleness, “because I’d hate
for her mate-or her family-to find out she was stressed at all.”
I inhale slowly, forcing my shoulders down.
‘Evelyn… did you see that?’ Sienna mind-links, the words buzzing with disbelief. ‘You
made the stuff on the table move. The lights too.’
‘I didn’t even realize,’ I answer honestly. ‘And it wasn’t me. I think it was the baby.’
Sienna’s awe pours through the link. ‘Your baby just protected you. Wow. This kid is
going to be powerful.’
My hand slides to my stomach automatically. I rub in slow circles, speaking to the little
life inside me like they can understand every word.
‘Hey, little bean. Mommy’s okay. You need to relax and just grow-get big and strong for
Daddy and me, alright?’
Warmth spreads through my chest and down my arms, soft and soothing. Comfort
settles into my bones.
I smile despite myself.
Ms. Rebecca returns with more food-her signature yogurt parfait. Honestly, she is a
major contributor to any extra pounds I end up with.
“Thank you, Ms. Rebecca,” I say, immediately digging in.

To keep everything from circling back to the flickering lights and Whitney’s mouth, I shift.
topics. “So what’s with the extra training, Whitney?”
Whitney brightens again. “You never know when the right opportunity will pop up.”
“Like the open Royal King and Queen spots?”
“Well… yes.” She smiles like it’s a given. “I mean, I am family.”
“Aren’t there other relatives too?”
“Not ones who’ve shown interest,” she says, setting the banana down. “And I’m hoping
for the Alpha and Luna’s support here. Having their backing could… move me forward.”
“That’s a conversation you’ll need to have with both of them,” I reply.
Whitney hesitates, then aims for sincere. “I was hoping you could say something too. To
Luna Bridget. I’m not her biggest fan, but… I’m working on it.”
For once, it almost sounds real.
I glance at Archer and Sienna, suddenly wondering if this whole setup was their idea-
some harmless little push to get Whitney to grow up.
“Let me think about it,” I say.
I finish the parfait and lean back, palm still on my stomach. The way Archer and Sienna
look at me is familiar now-soft, curious, a little wistful. I know what they’re thinking.
A few months ago, we were dancing at bonfires and slipping into clubs like we owned
the night. Now I mostly want to climb into bed with my gorgeous mate and-
Okay. Hormones.
Still… sex sounds incredible.
I should probably mind-link him just to let him know he’s on my mind.
Before I can, two warriors stroll up-Mason and Thaddeus. Neither of them is assigned.
to my detail, and both are in workout gear.
“Whitney, you ready to train?” Mason asks, pulling his short locs away from his face.
Whitney’s smile turns bright and flirt-ready. “Hey Mason! Definitely.”

Archer practically lights up. “Thaddeus!”

“Oh. Hey, Archer.” Thaddeus’s eyes flick to her for half a second. “Hi, Sienna.”
He gives Archer exactly nothing, and I watch her try not to react.
Sienna looks uninterested, scanning the room like she’s already done with the whole
exchange.
Archer’s voice turns breezy and dismissive in retaliation. “Oh-hi, Thad.”
Sienna adds, dry as sand, “He was trying to get my attention while you were busy
handing him yours.”
Thaddeus glances away like he didn’t hear it.
Whitney rises, waving at us as she backs away. “I’ll catch you ladies later. Training calls.”
Then she tosses me a look. “Thanks for helping me out, Evelyn.”
I only smirk. She definitely heard me say I’d think about it.
As they leave, Archer lets out a long breath. “Thaddeus is never going to notice me.”
“Then he doesn’t deserve you,” I tell her, squeezing her hand. “And he isn’t your mate.”
Sienna snorts. “Chicks before d***s, right?”
Archer and I crack up.
“I need to get work done in the lab,” I say, standing.
Right on cue, Ms. Rebecca appears again, already holding a drink like she’s magical too.
“A smoothie to go for my expectant mother.”
My face softens instantly. “Thank you. The baby says thanks too.”
She smiles warmly as I leave the dining hall, sipping strawberry-banana and holding my
stomach with my free hand. My two assigned men fall in with me as I head toward my
lab.
When I turn into the corridor, I spot three figures waiting outside my door.
Bridget.
I don’t even need the sight. Her scent gives her away immediately, and her two warriors

“Hey, Bridget,” I say, stepping up for a hug. “I’ve never seen you over here.”
Her belly is round and adorable-more prominent than mine even, though I’m further
along. Twins will do that.
“How are the Omni twins doing?” I ask.
It’s the nickname I’ve decided on, because I already know those babies are going to be
magical.
Bridget smiles. “Growing and happy. How are you?”
“Good,” I say, then laugh under my breath. “Also, I’m pretty sure this kid has powers. I
think they made the lights flicker in the dining hall.”
Bridget freezes mid-step. “Wait-seriously?”
“Yeah,” I tell her, scanning my credentials to unlock the lab doors as she follows me
inside. “But don’t repeat it. Connor will show up the second the rumor reaches him.”
The lights click on, bathing the space in clean brightness. My lab is everything I need-
every tool, every piece of equipment, every setup where I can actually focus.
I’ve been developing new products for the company, including a surgical patch designed
for field use-applied fast, then dissolving into the skin.
Bridget turns in a slow circle, impressed. “This is really nice. Do you have a team?”
She settles onto a barstool, immediately cradling her belly as she sits.
“I do,” I say. “There are four lab groups total. Each team stays in their own lab. This one
is mine.”
I glance around with a stupid amount of pride, like I’m showing off a nursery.
Bridget’s mouth twitches. “As much as I’d love a tour of your Bunsen burners… that’s not
why I’m here.”
I exhale. “Yeah. I figured.”
She watches me closely. “Did I pick up on something weird with you, Archer, and Sienna
during party planning?”

“Funny you noticed,” I say, leaning a hip against the counter. “The other day I saw Archer and Sienna go talk to Whitney.”
“Maybe they think she’s changing.”
“Then she shows up at breakfast and tells me I’m carrying my fat baby weight really
well,” I say flatly.
Bridget’s eyes flare. “That whore.”
“Exactly,” I agree. “And then she asks if I’ll put in a good word with you.”
Bridget’s tone turns sharp. “For what?”
“The royal position,” I say. “I told her I’d think about it, but is there really-”
The lab door slams open so hard I nearly jump out of my skin.
Connor.
Angry Connor.
He storms in, eyes blazing. “What happened? Why am I getting a message from your
detail and not from you?”
