Chapter 75 At last, the truth…

Evelyn’s POV

“Curse? What curse?” The words tumble out of me as my thoughts skid in every direction. “Connor, what’s happening?”

His grandmother just stared at us, plain as anything, and said he was cursed-and that I was his mate. Is that why he has been refusing to claim me?

Connor’s hand finds mine as if it belongs there. “Grandma… what are you even saying?” His voice is sharp with disbelief.

I stare at his fingers on my skin, out in the open, in the middle of the hallway. He doesn’t seem to notice he’s doing it.

Grandma Celia lets out a long breath and scans the corridor like the walls might be listening. “We’re not doing this here. We’re talking-everyone is. Your parents’ room.

Now.”

She starts off immediately.

Connor tugs me with him, but I falter. My feet won’t cooperate with my brain.

Grandma Celia pivots back, her gaze pinning me. “You’re part of this too, dear.”

“I don’t get it,” I manage.

“And you will. In there.” She herds us forward without giving me another inch of space to

argue.

My mouth twists into a frown as we move past clusters of people filling the pack

grounds. It’s still days until the coronation, yet the place is already swarming-outsiders

coming from everywhere, especially the ones drawn by rumors of the Omni-Wolf.

Connor’s eyes go distant for a beat. I can tell he is mind-linking his parents.

We reach the door. It swings open, and both of his parents stand there wearing matching confusion-confusion that deepens the second they see me.

Beta Curtis studies me like he’s connecting dots his wife hasn’t even noticed.

“Eliza,” Connor says, already tense.

“Mom, what is going on?” Eliza asks her mother as we’re practically rushed inside.

Grandma Celia heads straight for their bar like she owns the place. “Before anything else -why didn’t you ever tell him about the family curse?”

Beta Curtis turns to Eliza. “Family curse?”

Eliza’s laugh is strained. “You mean that bedtime horror story you used to throw at me to scare me into behaving? That?” She gestures at Connor like he’s proof. “I never believed it. I looked at my son-perfect.”

My throat tightens. “What curse?”

Grandma Celia snaps her gaze to me. “You can’t look at that boy and tell me you don’t s

ee it. It’s obvious.”

“Someone explain,” Beta Curtis says, voice rising. His aura pushes through the room,

heavy and commanding.

Grandma Celia doesn’t blink. “Fine. Your son is cursed.”

My breath catches. “I’m… cursed?”

Eliza’s head whips toward Connor. “You have a mate?”

Grandma Celia takes a casual sip of whiskey, then gestures between us. “I mean, I’ve

caught them together more than once…” She pauses, reading the room as tempers start

to flare.

Eliza steps forward like she might explode. “You found your mate and you didn’t tell us?”

Connor’s voice goes rough. “And you knew I had a curse and never said a word?”

Grandma Celia’s attention slides to me, softer but no less serious. “Sweetheart, you

should bring your parents. And Alpha Ryder. I don’t intend to repeat this twice.”

“Okay,” I whisper, though my head is roaring. Mate. Curse. Both of us. My hands tremble.

I open a group mind-link because I need this over with before I fall apart.

‘Mom. Daddy. I need you in Beta Curtis and Eliza’s room. Now. We need to talk.’

‘Why are you in their room?’ my mother shoots back instantly. ‘Evelyn, are you okay?’

I’m not. I’m barely upright.

Grandma Celia appears at my side and presses a drink into my hand like she’s done it a

thousand times.

Connor and Eliza’s voices rise behind me; Beta Curtis tries to keep them from tearing into

each other.

‘Please come,’ I push through the link, panic fraying my thoughts. ‘And bring Ryder and

Bridget.’

I cut the link before my emotions spill through it.

Then I drink the whiskey like it’s air.

Connor is on me in two strides. “You shouldn’t be drinking.” He reaches for the glass.

“I need something,” I say, eyes burning, voice unsteady.

He stops trying to take it and just wraps his arms around me, his sadness pressing into

my ribs.

“I swear I’ll fix this,” he murmurs.

For a second-just one-I let myself breathe in him.

Then the knock comes, and everything detonates.

Eliza forces a breath. “I’ll request tea for everyone.”

The door opens again.

Ryder storms in first, moving straight toward Connor like a charging animal.

“Ryder, wait!” Bridget calls from the hall.

“Ryder!” I shout-but it’s too late.

He grabs Connor’s shoulder, spins him, and drives a fist into his eye.

Connor goes over the couch from the impact.

“You’ve been fucking my little sister,” Ryder roars, already reaching for him again “All

this time and you didn’t have the balls to come to me!”

Connor’s hands lift in a helpless half-defense. “I know. I’m sorry–”

Ryder hits him again.

The room turns into chaos. Bridget hauls at Ryder’s arm. Beta Curtis wedges himself between them. Connor refuses to strike back.

My parents rush in right after, and even Iron Fang slips inside to secure the door from the inside like we’re under siege.

“Ryder, stop!” I scream.

“He’s still recovering!” Bridget pleads, voice cracking. “Stop it. Now!”

“Ryder, enough,” my mom orders, steel in her tone.

Connor coughs out, “It’s not like that, man. I love her.”

My stomach flips. “You love me?”

“The hell you do,” Ryder snarls, eyes flashing-Talon surging close to the surface.

“Enough!” Dad’s voice slams through the room, dominant and absolute.

Silence drops like a guillotine.

Only harsh breathing remains-my mate, my brother, both of them vibrating with fury.

Dad’s gaze cuts to Connor with a lethal calm that makes my skin prickle. “What is the

meaning of this? Why are we here?” He looks like he regrets not landing the first punch. “Are you sleeping with my daughter, Beta Connor?”

Connor swallows. “Alpha Marcus-”

“Yes or no.”

Dad’s wolf flashes in his eyes.

I step forward before Connor can be torn apart. “He’s my mate, Daddy.”

Mom’s face crumples. “What? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Connor moves to stand beside me, taking the hit. “It’s on me. I told her I couldn’t claim

her. But I wasn’t going to reject her.”

Ryder spits the words like poison. “Oh, but you could still fuck her?”

“That’s not fair,” I snap, voice shaking. Because I didn’t exactly make it easy for Connor to

do anything right.

Grandma Celia lifts her glass and speaks over us all. “It’s my fault too.”

My mom turns, baffled. “How is this your fault?”

Eliza throws her hands up. “This curse nonsense has gone far enough. Mom, please. It’s

absurd.”

Another knock. A cart of tea is delivered.

My hands are still shaking, but I reach for a cup anyway. Bridget checks it for poison

before letting anyone touch it. Then it’s passed around like a peace offering.

“Eliza, damn it,” Grandma Celia says, and then glances at my father. “Excuse my

language, Alpha. Luna. Everyone. But my daughter refuses to accept it. There is a curse.

A real one. It was placed on our family years ago-back when I was no older than Evelyn

is now.”

She points at the seating area. “Sit. All of you.”

People obey, the way they do when the air shifts and something old and dangerous

crawls into the room.

I sit beside Connor and lift my fingers to his face. The swelling where Ryder’s fist landed

is already easing. I want to believe it’s because I’m close-because I’m his mate.

Connor threads his hand through mine, openly, for the first time. Relief washes through

me, bittersweet.

No more hiding.

Now we just have to survive what comes next.

Grandma Celia stares into her glass for a moment and begins.

“When I was a young witch, I met a man.” Her tone is almost wistful. “He wasn’t my

mate. But I fell hard, and he fell right back. He was a warlock from packs away, here for

training. We had… a beautiful, reckless time.”

Eliza makes a noise of protest. “Mom-”

“Oh hush,” Grandma Celia says, waving her off. “Anyway. When it was time for him to

leave, he asked me to run with him. To disappear. To travel. I knew my mate was still out

there somewhere, but this man was daring, gorgeous, and-yes-fantastic in bed”

“Mom!” Eliza yelps.

Grandma Celia shrugs like she can’t help being herself. “So we ran. We made plans like

love was enough.”

Her gaze hardens.

“Then a telegram arrived. His mate had been waiting for him the whole time.” She taps a finger on the glass. “I thought we were honest with each other. We weren’t. He had lied

because he didn’t want to commit to her back home.”

A chill crawls up my arms.

“I ended it,” Grandma Celia continues. “I sent him back to his mate, where he belonged.

But he didn’t want her. He never did.”

The room stays locked on her.

“And then she found us.” Grandma Celia’s voice drops. “She was a witch too. She put a

spell on me.”

Connor squeezes my hand like he’s anchoring himself.

“The curse was this,” Grandma Celia says. “The first male born in my line would never

find his mate. And if he did-if he marked her-he would die soon after.”

Eliza shoots up like she’s been slapped. “That’s insane! My son does not have a curse!”

“I can see it on him,” Grandma Celia says, unmovable.

Bridget leans forward. “I could see it too. Violet and her daughter could as well. We

didn’t understand what we were seeing, but it was there.”

Ryder’s attention snaps to Bridget, then swings back to Connor with new, unsettled

focus.

I turn to Connor, dread blooming. “So… that’s why you wouldn’t claim me?”

Connor’s jaw flexes. “I didn’t know it was a family curse. But I found out a year ago that I

had a curse on me.”

“I started getting letters. Texts,” he says. “They told me if I found my mate and the spell was repeated, she would die. I did everything I could to keep you safe once I knew it was you. I tried staying away.”

His grip tightens. “I couldn’t.”

My eyes sting. “Oh goddess… I’m sorry. I was so cruel to you. I treated you like you were hurting me when you were trying to protect me.”

“No,” he says immediately. “It’s on me. I should have told you the truth instead of

pretending secrecy was protection.”

Eliza’s anger breaks into grief. “Goddess… Mom, I can’t believe it’s real. I never believed

you.” Her voice trembles. “This is my fault too.”

Beta Curtis pulls her close, grounding her.

“Blame later,” Beta Curtis says, gaze going to my father. “We fix it now.”

“Agreed,” Dad answers.

Bridget sets her tea down, expression tight. “So how do we break it?”

Grandma Celia doesn’t hesitate. “I have to kill the witch who cast it.”

Eliza’s head snaps up. “Who? How do we even find her? And what if she’s dead?” Her hands clench. “Because if she’s alive, I’m going to need time alone with her for what she did to my child.”

“She isn’t dead,” Grandma Celia says, cold certainty in her voice. “She’s still in her original home, waiting for me.”

She sets her glass down carefully.

“Her name is Eloise Beaumont.”

Ryder goes still. Then his eyes sharpen with recognition. “Eloise Beaumont?” He looks to Bridget. “That’s the name of the woman who got our staff in here to poison Evelyn.”

He swallows hard. “The name you pulled from Ingrid.”
