Chapter 97 – Question of the Day…
Evelyn’s POV
“Sorry I barged in on your meeting,” I say-pure fabrication-while his fingers comb
lazily through my hair. Connor is half draped over me, just enough weight to pin me
where I am.
“I see you, Beta,” I mumble. “You’re not letting me sit up. So… what is it? What do you
want to ask?”
His mouth curves. “You’re too damn sharp. I was imagining it, that’s all. You-with a pup.
You carrying some beautiful little thing with your eyes.”
“Or a perfect little boy with your face,” I counter, smiling. “Fine. But if we do this, you’re
giving me time to keep up my research. Then yes-I want your pup. Maybe… six?”
“Always.” His voice turns certain, the way it does when he means every syllable. “I’ve
supported you and I will keep supporting you. And six?” He huffs a laugh. “I can manage. However many the Moon Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading!
I push up to kiss him-and immediately jerk back with a sharp wince.
“My breast.” I suck in a breath. “Sorry, babe.”
Connor presses a kiss to the bite, warm and apologetic. “Couldn’t help it. I needed to
mark you again.” The ache eases under his mouth like his lips are a balm.
My chest tightens for a different reason. “Bridget,” I say quietly. “How is she-really?
Ryder got her out so fast I couldn’t even get a read on her.”
Connor’s expression shifts. “Ryder hasn’t said much.”
“She was drenched in blood, Connor.” The words come out ragged. “I can’t even picture
what she lived through. I should’ve been there. I should’ve fought next to her. This is on
“Hey.” He adjusts me onto his lap like I weigh nothing. “No.”
I swallow hard, fear rising anyway. “Do you think he…?” I can barely force it out. “He
wanted heirs from her. What if he-”
My eyes burn. I have prayed, again and again, that he never touched her. But prayers

Connor’s tone turns firm, protective. “We’re not doing that. Bridget is the Omni-Wolf.
She’s strong-she’s a strong Luna-and no matter what happened, she survived it. She’ll
talk when she’s ready. And no matter what she tells you, we show up. We love her. Unconditionally. And she will not carry your guilt.”
He folds me into him. My smaller body fits against his broad chest like it was designed
for it. His mouth brushes the top of my head, and the steadiness of him pulls me back
from the edge.
By morning, I’m dressed and moving with purpose-heading straight for Bridget,
regardless of how much my brother might argue. Connor has kept me held all night:
arms around me, hands soothing, love grounding me. Goddess, I love that man.
Today I need to see her.
As I turn toward her floor, I nearly collide with Archer and Sienna.
“Evelyn!” Archer says, wrapping me up in a tight hug. “We’ve missed you!”
“Hey, you two.” I hug back, relief flooding me. “It’s so good to see you.”
Sienna drops her voice to a whisper anyway. “How are you? And… how is Luna Bridget?”
Wolves hear everything. If I so much as hesitate, gossip will sprint through the pack
faster than a shifted runner.
“I’m doing well,” I answer smoothly, the practiced cadence of a Beta’s wife. “And Luna Br idget has been resting and well cared for. She’ll be back to her Luna duties soon.”
Archer brightens. “Good! I want all of us together again. Are you going to see her now? C
an we come?”
“I am,” I say, “but let’s set something up-an actual girls’ day. Food, drinks, mani-pedis.
The works.”
Sienna’s eyes light. “Yes. Please.”
“Perfect,” Archer adds. “Tell her we said we love her, okay?”
“I will.” My stomach reminds me I’m starving-apparently all the sex Connor and I have
been having comes with consequences. “Lunch later? Have either of you eaten?”

We split off, but I glance back down the hall-and catch them pausing to chat with
Whitney. Since when?
Yes, Whitney helped locate Bridget. That doesn’t mean she’s suddenly part of our inner
circle.
I keep my face neutral and my eyes open. One lesson I’ve learned the hard way: family
first. Everyone else earns trust inch by inch.
They laugh together and drift toward the game room.
I continue upward, nodding to the guards as they step aside. This level is locked down
now-especially after everything that happened to our Luna. My wing is opposite theirs,
so both of us can breathe behind our own walls.
I reach their door. Before my hand even closes around the handle, it swings open.
Ryder stands there shirtless in basketball shorts, skin slick with sweat.
My mouth tightens immediately.
“Evelyn,” he says, flat as stone.
“Oh, goddess,” I blurt. “Please tell me you were working out and not… working on my
best friend.” The thought nearly makes me gag. “I mean-we’re wolves, sure, we enjoy
sex, but my brother and my friend is still-”
Then my brain pivots, wickedly practical. “Actually, wait. I take it back. I hope you were,
and I hope there’s a b-a-b-y on the way. I can live with that. I can spoil an auntie-baby
absolutely rotten.”
Ryder laughs under his breath and motions me inside. “You’re impossible.”
“I’ll tell you it’s the second one, just to make your day,” he says.
I’m smiling as I step past him.
“Evelyn, ignore him,” Bridget calls out.
She appears wearing boxing gloves, cheeks flushed, hair pulled back. Alive. Present.
Herself.

“We were boxing,” she says. Then, with a wicked little eyebrow wiggle: “But don’t worry
-we’re also having lots of sex.”
I bark out a laugh I didn’t know I’d been holding in. “Bridget, I’m just happy you’re
standing here, so I’m letting that go.”
I rush forward and hug her hard.
A flash hits me-her body drenched in blood that wasn’t hers. I hadn’t sensed any
serious injury then, and I still can’t wrap my head around how she managed what she
did.
“Come on,” she says, stepping back. “Let’s order salads and watch something. Ryder
hasn’t left me alone for a second, and honestly? I’m okay with it. He’s been… really.
sweet.”
Her gaze softens toward him while he helps tug the gloves off her hands.
“What do you want?” Ryder asks.
The way he looks at her-like she’s oxygen-makes my chest ache in the best way.
“Greek salad,” Bridget decides. “Grilled chicken. Dressing on the side.”
“Same,” I say, dropping into an armchair with a sigh.
Ryder nods and heads toward the bathroom. A moment later the shower kicks on. I don’t have to hear him mind-linking the kitchen staff to know he already has.
Bridget studies me. “So. How are you doing? Don’t sugarcoat it. I can handle the truth.”
She lets out a small chuckle and glances toward the bathroom as if checking that we
have a sliver of privacy.
“I’m… better,” I admit. “Still processing. It’s a lot-too much-packed into too little time.
But I know this was the road meant for me.”
“So philosophical,” I say, trying to lighten it. “And you’re not wrong.” I tilt my head. “Do
you want to talk to someone? We actually have therapists here now. When we merged
and started sharing territory with vampires and witches, it was… a lot. The pack needed.
support systems.”
Bridget’s expression goes thoughtful. “I’m not sure. But I’ll think about it.”

I nod, then let the words tumble out, because I need her to hear how big this is. “In
months, Bridget-you learned you were a werewolf. You found your mate. Then you found out you’re basically a myth. You learned powers you didn’t know existed, and then
people started hunting you for them. If it were me, I would’ve completely lost it.”
Bridget laughs softly. “You wouldn’t have. You’re stronger than you believe, Evelyn.”
“Then why did you shut me out?” The hurt slips through before I can catch it. “I could’ve
helped. I could’ve fought next to you. But it felt like you were trying to keep me safe.”
My eyes drop to my hands.
“Evelyn.” Bridget’s voice turns serious as she takes my fingers in hers. “I did it for me. If
he’d taken both of us, he would’ve used you-tortured you-to force me to give in. And
once he got what he wanted from me, he would’ve killed you anyway. There was no
good ending in that scenario.”
She squeezes gently. “I needed you safe. I needed Connor beside Ryder so Ryder could stay focused. Connor couldn’t have done that with you missing. He would’ve torn the
world apart.”
The logic lands, heavy and undeniable.
“You’re right,” I whisper. “And I’m sorry. I came here for you, and I turned it into my
feelings.”
“It’s fine,” she says, the kindness in her smile making me want to cry all over again. “You
needed to say it. Are you lighter now?”
“A little.” I blow out a breath. “How do you make it look so easy? You stepped into
leadership like you were born for it.”
Bridget snorts. “Some days I’m absolutely making it up as I go.”
She glances toward the door as a knock sounds.
Ryder emerges fully dressed and crosses to answer. Ms. Rebecca stands there with
another staff member-Jolene. I’ve been forcing myself to learn names after everything
with Oscar.
“Alpha. Luna. And Ms. Evelyn,” Ms. Rebecca says, dipping into a small respectful bow.
“It’s an honor to serve you.”

“Ms. Rebecca, I’m glad you’re here,” Bridget replies, perfectly composed-every inch the
Luna. Then she turns to the younger woman. “Hello, Jolene. How’s the new mate?”
Jolene blushes bright red. “Thank you for asking, Luna. We’re wonderful. Over the moon,
actually and we’re already expecting.”
“Oh!” I burst out. “Congratulations! That’s amazing!”
“Thank you, Ms. Evelyn!” Jolene says, beaming as she wheels a cart inside.
Ryder lifts the lids, inhales, and checks each container with that sharp, newly honed
awareness-Bridget’s poison-sensing gift rubbing off on him more and more the longer
they’re together. He gives a small nod: safe.
“Jolene,” Ryder says, “make sure you enroll in all the prenatal care. Use every benefit.
Take the time you need when your pup arrives.”
Her eyes go wide. “Alpha Ryder… thank you.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Ms. Rebecca adds, smiling for real. “Thank you for all you do.”
“And thank you,” Ryder replies to Ms. Rebecca, “for choosing to stay with the pack.
You’re invaluable.”
She smiles back, something proud and relieved in her face. “I appreciate that. And thank
you again for the time off-I truly needed it.”
Then she gestures to the cart. “I also made my special yogurt parfaits, extra fruit. You
two need to eat every bite.”
Bridget and I laugh at the same time. Ms. Rebecca feeds us like we’re her own.
“Deal,” Bridget says.
“She made those for me every day before I even knew I was pregnant,” Jolene adds with
a laugh, shaking her head.
Bridget and I look at each other.
