She pulled the throw blanket lighter over her comfortable loungewear.

She had assumed Lucas was only staying for one night and wouldn’t return, so his reappearance cought her completely off guard.
“Is there a problem with me coming over?” Lucas frowned, slipping off his shoes as he walked toward her.
“I’m perfectly fine on my own. You don’t need to go out of your way every day. Acting like this isn’t going to win anyone over? Lynn’s face flushed as she spoke.
Lucas’ attention shifted to the takeout containers on the coffee table that she had just beerheating from.
Lynn took a guilty step back.
“Should I leave, then?” He picked up his phone and showed her a photo he’d taken the previous night of the two drunk men.
Lynn’s heart lurched, a cold shiver running down her spine.
Maybe criticizing him hadn’t been the best move.
“You’ll stay at my place. For one, it’s not practical for you to be here alone, and secondly, this building just isn’t safe.”
For some reason, Lynn thought she detected a hint of genuine concern in Lucas’ voice.
“Oh…” Lynn nodded, then immediately reconsidered. “No, living together before we’re even…”
“I mean…” Lynn scrambled for a better excuse. “You don’t even like me, so why are you going to all this trouble?”
Her voice was soft, but Lucas heard every word.
“It’s true; I’m not head-over-heels for you,” Lucas admitted, shifting his gaze away. “But since I’ll have to settle down with someon eventually, marrying someone who’s wealthy and attractive isn’t a bad arrangement.”
Jerk.
“Are you finished eating? If so, go get changed.” Lucas glanced at her.
“Are your standards for a partner really that shallow?” Lynn scoffed. “You must be truly desperate.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Lucas’ intense gaze dropped to her exposed legs, which weren’t fully covered by the blanke
Lynn immediately sensed the shift in the air and quickly tucked her legs beneath her, falling silent.
Lucas’ lips curved into a slight, knowing smile, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he looked at her with a smoldering intensity. “You’ right,” he said, his voice dropping low. “I am… pretty hungry right now.”
The rough, suggestive tone of his voice sent a tremor through Lynn. She curled herself into the corner of the sofa, not daring to meet his eyes.
Earlier that afternoon, her father had called to check on her. Lucas must have spoken to the Murphys, because while he hadn’t exaggerated the situation, he’d made it clear they shouldn’t worry and that he would handle things.

Her family didn’t fully understand Lucas’ intenfions, so they had ever called his grandfather, who was equally in the dark. In the end, everyone decided to stay out of it.
Now Lynn felt like she was caught in the middle, being grilled from both sides, utterly miserable.
“Still not changing? Do you need me to help you?” Lucas pressed.
Hearing this, Lynn nervously clutched the blanket around herself and hurried toward her bedroom.
Lucas smirked, stood up, and began looking around the apartment. He started gathering her everyday essentials and favorite snacks into a bag.
“Lucas,” Lynn called out as she emerged from the bedroom, having changed into casual jeans and a sweater. She was still holding a few unfolded items in her arms.
Lucas turned to look at her. “What is it?”
“You’re just doing all this to keep our families happy, right?” She wanted a straight answer.
“No,” he replied without hesitation.
Of course not. A man with his pride and accomplishments wouldn’t marry someone just to appease his family.
Those days were long gone.
If not for the family, then why?
He said he didn’t have strong feelings for her, and it wasn’t about family pressure, so what was his motive?
Just physical attraction?
She shuddered. What a creep…
“Then I’ll stay in the guest room. You can’t… take advantage,” Lynn said, her voice trembling slightly, whether he agreed or not.
“Don’t tell me what I can or can’t do,” Lucas replied, averting his gaze.
If he decided to do something, no promise or oath would stop him.
Lucas really is impossible.

Back when she had tried so hard to get his attention, he had ignored her completely. Now, she was convinced Lucas must have
is mind-why else would he be clinging to her like this?
As luck would have it, just as Lynn followed Lucas out of the elevator into the parking garage, she spotted the two drunk men fr that night leaning against a car, smoking.
They were chatting and laughing but fell completely silent the moment they saw Lucas step out.
