When the river starts to get shallow, I wait until I find a good spot to get out. In this area, there are mountains. Mountains have caves. I just need to make sure we’re not too close to a pack and then we should be safe. Well, that and I need to make sure that our scents are covered as much as possible by the water.

I find a place where the river expands and that’s where I finally decide to get out. We’ve been floating for a couple of hours, and right as I’m about to pick the woman and her pup up and carry them to the mountain that I see in the distance, he begins to fuss.

I doubt Nikki went north. She’d have had to go against the current and there’s no way she’s strong enough for that right now. She lost a lot of blood. More likely, she was making sure she was far away from Camden. I don’t think she realizes that she’s moving away from all of our packs, even Ezra’s.

I wonder if there’s some place out here where she stayed when she was on the run. Maybe that’s where she’s going. Maybe some place around here looks familiar to her. Maybe she’s headed to a place where she was safe before.

Maybe, maybe, maybe. Fucking maybes aren’t helping me to find her!

I hear the others head back toward me. I slow down, waiting for them.

They shift as they run up.

“We went about two miles down, nothing. Do you think she’d go even further?” Dutton asks.

I know they’re worried that she’ll drown. It’s a possibility if she passes out in the water. But I also know my mate. She’s tough as fucking nails. She won’t let herself drown, even if she’s distraught over losing our son. It would mean that Camden wins, and she won’t let him win.

“I don’t think she went north. I don’t think she was strong enough. I’m weak and I wasn’t being held with silver and didn’t lose a lot of blood delivering a child. So, the only explanation is that she went south.”

I stare across the river. It would have been really hard for her to cross. The logical explanation is that she continued south, floating as far as the river would take her. But my mate is resourceful.

“I want to cross to the other side. I want to see if she made it across.” I look at my companions. “Maybe we can split up. Dutton, you and I can cross and search for her scent on the other side and you two can keep following the river south. What do you think?”

I can tell by the way they’re looking at each other that they aren’t sure this is a good idea, but it’s the only one I have: She got in the river, she had to. If she did, she’ll have to come out somewhere.

“Let’s do it,” Dutton says. “We should check all possibilities.”

I nod. “Thank you.”

“You can thank me when we find her.”

Ezra and Jake take off, going to search for Nikki’s scent on this side. As we walk to the water, Dutton looks at me.

“Are you strong enough to get across on your own?” he asks me.

“If my mate could do it, then I’d better be fucking strong enough to do it.”

“We don’t know that Nikki crossed,” he says diplomatically.
