Chapter 414
When no one answers me, I turn and look at them. “Where did she go?”
“We can’t find her trail. We think…we think she went into the river,”
Ezra says.
I turn and look at the river. There’s no way my mate could have survived the river after what she’s been through.
“She’s not dead,” I say, my throat tight. “I’d know if she was dead.”
“I suggest we split up. Half go north and half go south,” Hunter says.
“I’ll go south. Maybe she floated down river. Maybe…maybe she wanted to say goodbye to our son…” I stop, unable to continue.
“We’ll check Robin, both sides of the river. We’ll find her,” Dutton
says.
We divide up and begin running again, trying to find my mate’s scent so I can finally, finally hold her again.
Jacqueline POV
I’d smelled the blood, could smell that it was a female and her pup, and I’d followed the scent. Maybe she needs help. I’m not sure what I can do, but out here, those of us on the run have to stick together.
Chapter 414
1 298 Wouchers
When I got close enough, I heard her struggling to deliver her pup. I could see that she was naked and thin, even with the baby inside her. It makes me wonder if she’s running too. Maybe we can help each
other.
I stayed close, not wanting to scare her while she was delivering her baby, but when it was born, it obviously wasn’t breathing. I thought maybe she’d let the baby die, but I was wrong. She obviously wants this pup.
She’d pushed air into the baby’s lungs until he’d started crying loudly. I watched as she began to cry and pulled her baby to her breast.
I wasn’t surprised when she passed out. She hadn’t even detached the umbilical cord to the baby. When he detached from her breast and began fussing, I knew I needed to step in.
I stayed in the water, making sure that the ones hunting me can’t find and track my scent as I approached. Neither of them has any clothing, so I tied off the umbilical cord and sliced it with my claw. Then I took the baby, a boy, into the water and washed him off. He did not like that, and he began complaining loudly.
“Look, Little Alpha. I need you to be quiet. Your Momma, needs help,” I say, pulling my own shirt off and wrapping it around him. I look at the woman. She reeks of Alpha, and she has a mark on her neck, so I‘ m guessing she didn’t escape the public claiming and has now run from her mate.
When I step to the edge of the water, I pull the woman toward me so my scent stays hidden and then I prop her body against mine as I help her son nurse from her breast.
Chapter 414
“Hey, sweet boy. I’m going to get you out of here.”
It takes a longer time than I was expecting until he falls asleep, but when he does, I burp him like I’ve seen other mothers do and then I unwrap him from my shirt, putting it over the woman and tying it off on the bottom before sliding the baby into the shirt, leaving his head out of the collar. It’s the best I can do now. If I’m taking them into the river, her body heat will help to keep them warm, and I can only carry one of them if I’m going to swim in this current.
I’ve just picked her up when I hear the howl, much closer than I would have expected.
I hurry into the water, thankful that she chose an area where there is a lot of rushing water to cover the sounds of me taking her into the river. Thankfully it’s still dark so I don’t have to worry too much about the wolves seeing me out here. I swim to the center of the river, letting the current take me as I struggle to keep both momma’s and baby’s heads above water.
