“Give him to me,” I say, again.

“Of course, Luna. He’s your son,” she says, handing him over to me. I look him over quickly, making sure that he’s not injured. He begins fussing in my arms.

“He’s due to eat again. Maybe you can feed him while I get you some food. We need to leave soon. We’re being hunted.”

“Hunted by whom?”

“I’m not sure. I’m guessing you were running from an Alpha based on your scent when I found you, and I’m running from anyone who wants to try and claim me publicly. There’s more than one, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to get you and your son out of here before they find us,” she says. “Nurse your son, I’ll be right back.”

“What’s your name?” I ask her before she can go too far.

“I’m Jacqueline, Luna.”

“I’m Nikki.”

“Nice to meet you, Luna Nikki,” she says.

“Just Nikki. Out here, we’re all the same, right?”

“I have, yes.” I tell her.

She nods. “Feed your son and when I get back, we’ll talk. How’s your wolf?”

“Silent.”

She cringes. “Not ideal, but we’ll figure it out.”

I like her already. I understand what it’s like to be on the run. I helped Letti and Allison, but that’s a far cry from helping a woman who is unconscious, whose wolf is silent and has a newborn child. I realize this woman has saved me, possibly from being captured by others and definitely from Camden. I can’t be sure that he didn’t find a way to get free.

When she leaves, I look down at my son. “Hey, baby boy. Are you

doing okay?” I ask, helping him to find my breast. He latches on easily and I realize that Jacqueline really did make sure he nursed from me while I was unconscious. It makes me wonder how long I’ve been out.

While he nurses, I smile down at him, wrapping his hand around my finger as I look him over. He’s perfect.

“Here, eat this,” Jacqueline says, coming back inside and handing me some cooked meat.

Ltake a couple bites of the meat and my stomach growls loudly.

“How long has it been since you’ve eaten?” she asks me.

“How long has it been since you found me?”

“Two days.”

“Then five days,” I say, shocked that I was out that long. If Jacqueline hadn’t found me…

“Thank you. You saved my son and probably me,” I tell her.

She looks sheepish as she eats. “I actually saw you give birth. I didn’t want to scare you, so I didn’t approach, but when you didn’t let your son die, I made sure to cut the cord and help him nurse. He was still covered in afterbirth, so I took him into the river to wash him off. But then I heard howls in the distance, and I knew one of us had been found. So, I wrapped him up against you and took us all out into the river. No offense, you reeked of Alpha and the water thankfully washed it off, although you still smell like an Alpha, so I’m assuming you are one.”

“I am. And so is my mate.”

“Yeah, I could smell him on you.”
